Oh I do hope it's not going to be Tommy Bache that killed Hettie, he and Heather are such a sweet couple. Another good chapter Jim, this story holds my interest all the way.
cheers

It is hard sometimes to accept that a person or persons one has come to admire could be guilty of some terrible crime but life can be tough in so many different ways. Many thanks for continually catching up on this story.

I'm running out of superlatives. Each chapter builds so effectively. This one threw in a surprise, a possible suspect.
Still enjoying the fun local dialogue and the character reveals.

hi
I got lost in the water, I had to just keep reading it. I love water, the power to sweep clean or not, the sheer magic of it's rush.
And the poor girl, I never thought it would be suicide, it just doesn't tally...but of course I have to keep reading...

The whole point of this is that it wasn't the fact of the baby that caused her depression yet that is what everyone immediately latches onto. Many thanks for this kind review.
reply by padumachitta on 01-Mar-2021
it isn't the baby...but she seems more strong than to suicide even over the mill and such...something just needs a bit more telling...and I like that...I like that I am thinking about it...

I'm a bit behind but have just caught up with the last two posts. There's a good deal of conjecture but a few more substantial facts beginning to emerge. You are now using your considerable knowledge of the mill's working excellently in support of the plot.

Thank you for this six star review. I am pleased you have enjoyed the chapter. By the way 'A Reluctant Star is now available in both paperback and eBook.

Thanks, Jim. I ordered A Reluctant Star a few weeks ago and it arrived here on Friday. Looks great. I'm looking forward to reading it. I like your choice of layout and font. Dolly's cover artwork looks good, too.

Thank you. Even after all the editing a number of errors scraped through that I discovered when I went through again altering the format for the eBook version. They are mostly line spacing errors. Next I must upload those corrections.

-I appreciate the picture and
the explanation in the notes,
and when it is discussed in the story.
-It helps to try and understand
where Hettie was and what might have happened.
-The discussion was very good, and
it was almost like sitting there listening
to them. The back and forth was
serious with no blame being cast,
except toward the end when all of
the Tom's are mentioned.
-I was surprised that Heather and
Tommy weren't upset at the line of
questioning.
-The timing of putting the children
to bed was convenient, and now
we wait to see the next result of
this conversation.

This chapter flows like the area of the river from the weir to the stopwave and beyond.
Every which subject from cause of death to feelings of despair
Every which way from workhouse-induced skills to those of more acceptable origins
Roiling topics such as admitting love prior to a current stable marriage
An interesting, yet convoluted, chapter

I loved your comparison of the flow of the chapter to the flow of the river over the weir and through the stop wave. Thank you for that lovely remark, not to mention the rest of the review.
reply by Katherine M. (k-11) on 28-Feb-2021
you're welcome. It was what came straight to mind when they were sorting out what a stop wave was. We have a sluice gate on the river 3 minutes from the house, so I spend ages every day studying the water flow there (but have never seen a body haha).
reply by the author on 28-Feb-2021
I have canoed down the very river I am describing and with some of the weirs you need to paddle at full tilt in order to get through the stop wave.
reply by the author on 28-Feb-2021
I never saw a body but one ay I thought I did. When I had waded up to it it turned out to be a tailor's dummy.
reply by Katherine M. (k-11) on 28-Feb-2021
    I can imagine.
Every spring we canoe doour river "en masse" from the sluice gate to the sailing club (2.5 hrs of normal canoeing) cleaning up as we go. As the weight of the waste increases it becomes harder to progress (no weirs thank goodness but several patches of white water)
reply by Katherine M. (k-11) on 28-Feb-2021
    re tailor's dummy
bet that was a shock. the most exotic thing I found once was a car wheel (yes, full metal wheel, not tyre)

It frightened me at first All I could see upstream at first, was this arm sticking up out of the water.

A fine piece of writing,as always. The way the water flow was explained through the conversation was brilliant. And her doubts too were intelligent.
You left the readers wondering about Tom.

Thank you for reading, reviewing and awarding six stars for this chapter. I am thrilled you liked the way the water flow was explained. I had thought of putting it in a note but decided it would be more fun if I could get it to come out as part of the conversation. Shooting a weir in a canoe can be a fraught business if you don't go fast enough and broach to in the stop wave - scary.

Another stellar chapter in this fine story you've spun about some ordinary characters whose relationships fascinate me, as a reader. The direction of Allen's inquiry is pointing increasingly in the direction of Hettie's death not being a suicide, but we may not know until much further on, and then there is the matter of Warburton's death being honorable, or not -- and many interrelated happenings. Again, I didn't find any errors; even though it's always possible for me to miss something, it's nice not to always be pointing things out. A clean read is always a pleasure.

I think ordinary people in trouble are far more interesting than the out and out psychopaths. I am so pleased that you find them coming alive. Many thanks for another complimentary review.

You're very welcome, Jim. I think you're right, especially when you put the work and imagination into creating their personalities. It's a real adventure :-)

PANTYGYNT:

It would be quite a shock to Heather - if not to lots of other folks - were
it to come out that 'her' Tom actually murdered Hettie. I am fairly sure, however, that Hettie did not commit suicide, baby, or no baby. It would seem that both Heath and 'her' Tom have had some interesting entanglements of their own that might just be coming to light for the first time during this time with Barrister Allen.

Dear Jim, Thank you for the more elaborate authors notes, tying both books together. Like Peter Allen I keep noticing more things with each post. This was noticing the birthdate of all the characters involved. And like Peter, I keep looking for someone with motive to murder Hettie.

It seems that those with a motive don't have an opportunity and those with opportunity don't have a motive don't have the opportunity. It seems it will need the wisdom of Solomon to find a solution. Does Allen have that? We shall see.

Thank you for reading and for this review.
