Fear of the Improbable

Interesting read. As a pharmacological minimalist, I feel the need to defend those who suffer from both pharmacophobia and improbaphobia. Some people have a history of having bad reactions to drugs (me), having doctors prescribe contraindicated drugs (me) and having life-altering deformities as a result of a drug given to their mother during pregnancy (me) and have also experienced a number of very improbable catastrophes (me). So, I am cautious with meds, and cautious about improbable possibilities. I don't live in a constant state of fear, but I proceed with reasoned caution and minimize risk. If you are one of the 5% that experiences bad side effects, the experience for you is 100%. In summary, not all "phobias" are irrational.

So true--100% devastating for the unfortunate 1%. No offense intended, Susan; I don't mean to make light of the subject in general; this is just one of my many riffs on Chuck's quirks.
-
No offense taken, just showing the other side of the coin. Re: Chuck's experience. Sometimes when people experience something traumatic, they "loop" on it. It can be difficult to have to share that looping experience, but it will probably abate with time.
-
He hasn't had trauma--he's just naturally "loopy."

Tell him from one phobia caduddle to another,
His fear is founded on huge pillars of empiric and scientific evidence.
Just Google or CDC
How many people die every year of correctly prescribed medicine
About 200 000 in USA.
Mazel tov
I say better scared than doctor prescribed liver failure.
Best Liz :-))Z.

I love the way you keep us guessing what's real and what isn't! Seems Chuck has a great imagination as well, but not in a good way. I was going to congratulate you on your new word when I read this last night, but now I see you've been outed! I still like it.

Your description of what happened to Chuck and what he thought and said before sounds very much like he is his own worst enemy. And on this subject you are brilliant. You seem to be up on everything. I hope Chuck survives this dilemma. It does sound dire.

Hello Liz
This is a great example of your blogging style. It is humorous, quick and topical. As an individual piece, it might not have 'legs' and be a classic work in the future, but in the moment, today, this week, it is something that is relevant and refers to issues the reader can immediately engage with. It would be great if you could find an outlet for these pieces, even if it is 'only' in a personal blog. I am not saying you are wasted here, but you are wasted here.
The correct treatments for Improbaphobia is a course of Dubium, twice each day until the symptoms are replaced by those of another ailment.
I wish you (and Chuck) safe and well.
cheers

It never occurred to me that what I coined facetiously is actually a recognized phobia! I appended a credit to Beth Shelby in the text.
I am thrilled by your vote of confidence and the ssssssurprise (alas, you can't retract a six---I deserve to be dinged for the inadvertent "plagiarism!)

This would have been a great entry for the "made-up words" contest! it is as humorous as ever, although doubtless not at the time, especially for poor Chuck! Well written, and creative to make such a clever piece from such an unlikely source.

Ha. Witty. And another Liz term!
Sounds like a classic came of
Sameoldshitola. It's an illness that hits everyone at some point in their lives. The main symptom: repeating the same stories. I heard in some cases muzzles were used!

I can see Chuck is a great source of material for your daily posts. Am I right in assuming that he hasn't had the vaccine yet but is afraid of what might happen when he gets his shot? If it will be of comfort, I have had my two shots with no such dire outcome. He is clearly suffering from improbaphobic. Maybe finding statistics on the people who have suffered ill effects from the vaccine might calm him. judi

Darn it, you won't get that credit in the medical journals after all. As they say, there's nothing new under the sun. (Wait, I thought I said that first.) judi

Sorta is better than not at all. The word is certainly appropriate. I have some relatives who would fall into that category. judi

Hello Liz.
You're very lucky to have someone as interesting as Chuck in your life. I will leave it up to you to decide where you would be without him.
We live in scary times and occasionally, the times can get the best of us. Most people are doing things that are not accustomed to doing. They are also seeing and hearing things that are not accustomed to experiencing.
