You make a valid point, Liz. Unfortunately, there are some who argue with reviewers at length. I try real hard not too, and others should do as you suggest. Even sending a pm may not be allowed, right? Some will not respond to a polite request for suggestions even.

I have to chuckle reading this post. The first private message I ever received here was a writer telling me he liked my writing but didn't like politics so he had no intention of ever reading my posts again.
What was funny was, It was a political writing contest I entered. It was hard not to be political. That's what prompted me to write more political posts. About 20%-25% have been political.
I reminded him that there are writers that wrote a LOT about politics. Twain, Orwell, Hugo, Huxley, Golding, Bradbury, Heller, Bierce, Kipling >>>>>>> and many more

I have to chuckle reading this post. The first private message I ever received here was a writer telling me he liked my writing but didn't like politics so he had no intention of ever reading my posts again.

Reminds me of the reviewers who demerit on the grounds that limericks are crude.

Good limericks are hard to write correctly. I finished second in a national limerick contest last year. I like 'em.

I've seen some writers go back and forth numerous times over a particular review, which often ends with one or both parties being muted. It's simply best not to engage. As you say, those comments can be read by others. I noticed that the writer who gave me a "1" has changed her tune considerably after being jousted by a FanStory biggie. The critic was new to the site and apparently thought she was going to bring immediate change to the writing. I didn't intended to go on and on, but it seems to follow your comments about how criticism can turn into ugliness. judi

Do you really think many people have time to spend reading other people's reviews. If something like a poem makes no sense at all to me, I may look to see what others have said but not often. I find what they've written usually indicates they have no clue either, but they give the poem six stars anyway.

I'd be so scared of forgetting to review belatedly, or lose the post in my overflowing messages box I can't bring myself to take your tack, so I just plow on awarding five stars to blatantly exceptional pieces of work. I do restrict myself to awarding one six per day, so that at least its a bit like a lottery, and work posted each day has an equal chance at the jackpot.

This is a good piece of advice, especially to new members here. I think many don't know how public the reviewing is. When I first started I was shocked with people sharing personal information like phone numbers in the reviews/replies!
