I love your story, Mary, because I have a very similar tale (but not telling it yet). We had The Alhambra and it was a gem...the city in its wisdom tore it down. Anyway, you did a great job with all the nostalgic details. Your writing style is direct and engaging. Very well done.

This lines here is so funny: "A blizzard of popcorn, Hot Tamales, and empty popcorn boxes rained down from those in the balcony, as well as from the back rows.
Mostly out of cowardice, I never took part in the popcorn barrage. When I tried to do something wrong, I was always caught. I honestly believed that a beam of light from above pointed me out as the wrongdoer.
I did toss a popcorn box during the movie, Love Me Tender. It was the first and only time, I tried it, and I flung the box far into the first few rows. However, I was proven right about the beam of light shining on me. It was from the usher, who then escorted me out of the theater with his hand on the back of my neck." Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

I worked in a movie theater in high school. Saturday matinees were hectic and exhausting but I loved working them. We had one theater in our town that was built in the style you describe and it was old and worn down, but you could feel the grandeur of what it once was.

I can remember those days as if they were yesterday. Saturday "arvo" lined up with seemingly thousands of kids. The films were about, Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Roy Rogers and hordes of "bad guys" with Gene Autry chasing and imprisoning them, much to the raucous carry on of "us" kids. It cost sixpence, provided by my Aunt Nell. Well done, thank you Mary, you brought back happy memories, blessings Roy

'8 AM to 1 PM' .... That was a long time! Even as a kid, I could not have enjoyed cartoons for that long.
'Once the doors opened, we attacked the candy stand like a swarm of locusts.' (A perfect word picture!)
I enjoyed the reminiscing!!! Well done!

I thought it was a great memory piece. What really made it come alive was the attention to details like the milk duds and raisonettes, the gum on the floor your shoes get stuck to, the cartoon special features before the main feature; bugs bunny and popeye and bluto. Guess those old theatres are going to go by the wayside in this streaming video world. Its a shame because it was such a unique part of our world and life growing up. Every summer my mom would take us to see the old Walt Disney movies; Dumbo and Pinochio, Lady and the Tramp, the Aristocats, 101 Dalmations, Tom Sawyer, Escape to Witch Mountain and Bednobs and Broomsticks. Can't forget the Love Bug, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes either. estory

Very well-written and brings back good old memories. (I graduated HS in '64 also). Our theater was in better shape but charged 1 Pepsi bottle cap for 2 hours of cartoons or other things/no adults around. You all ate the same junk we ate. Really enjoyed your story.

Mary, This is very well written and has wonderful nostalgia in its thought and presentation. The story development is very good and the theme stays consistent and logical. Very good job on this childhood story.

It seems it was the thing to do in those days, on a Saturday. We here in Canada also had the Saturday Movie that we never missed. I remember those days fondly. We didn't throw stuff though. Your reminiscence was well written and I enjoyed reading it.
