This story broke my heart as I have had to part with too many furry friends. I found it very touching. I think dogs must go to heaven. I think they are sent down to be our guardians and life coaches. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing. Stay safe.

Oh, I'm so sorry for your loss, or what is soon to be a loss. Animals become so much a part of our lives and it hurts so bad to lose them. I know they come with a shorter life span than their human counterparts, and I know it's important that we love them their whole life and to them it's enough, but we have to go on without them and it hurts. You did a great job of expressing this in your heart-felt story.

Take care,
Rhonda

This is a sad story to see Dinky go. A pet being a companion is always good, it does not argue with you, Nor does it fight with you. It gives you more comfort than annoyances.

I can understand it is hard to see a pet go... I have seen that happened in my relatives...

Thank you for sharing this moving story.

Congrats on your prize, Earl!

Heartwarming/breaking story--masterful personification of this delightful creature--great bit of wit with the dustmop dogs that fit into purses--my friend calls the short-haired toy dogs fetuses. Condolences.

Hi Earl,
Thanks for sharing your true story, a good entry for the contest.
Our pets become a real part of the family. We have had a rough time this past couple of years. We had to put our cairn terrier down. Gracie was 15 years old when we discovered tumors on her hind end. They steadily got larger, and we had to decide to have her operated on, or let her go. We felt we had to give her a chance. So we paid about $1000. The vet told us the cancerous lumps would come back in a few months. And they did come back... but it took a whole year before things got to the point where we had to send her on. I am a Christian, and I totally believe that our pets will be waiting for us in Heaven. We have cats as well. Originally, there were six. But in the last year, we had to put Louis and Roger down as well. Louis is our daughter's cat, but Roger was our boy. He was a beautiful Black (with a few white markings) Maine Coon. A gentle soul, not a mean bone in his body. Though twice the size of our other cats, he'd run from them. Meek and mild. We miss him and Gracie so much, and know exactly how you feel. It is a hard thing to do, ending your pet's life. We had them cremated, and they are in our curio cabinet. They'll be placed in our caskets when we leave this earth. Some of the pets will go with my wife, and some will go with me.
A touching tale, Earl. Take comfort in knowing you provided a good home for Dinky, and that you'll see him again one day.
Cheers,
Kimbob

I am banking on our pets going to Heaven! They really are out babies, and we love them as such. I miss mine every day, and always will. I know how hard it is for you, my hubby and I cried oceans when ours died. You had me in tears reading your heart-wrenching story. I'm so sorry. Beautifully written, and so sad. Good luck in the contest. Sending you a hug. Sandra xx

Excellent and moving story. My family received our dog Deja from a neighbor who only had female dogs and did not want to have a young frisky male dog introduced into the mix. So, we took Deja in and he became our dog. This was one smart Terrier-Poodle mix, he had a different bark that would let us know if a family member was at the door, a friend or a stranger, all depending on the way he would bark. One day, after years of his being in our family, I saw him lying in the back yard and I thought it was strange that he had not barked or even moved. I even called him lazy, but did not think to investigate. My wife came home and took immediate notice of his inactivity. She checked him out and her tears told the whole story. Since that terrible time, I refuse to get another dog, I do not believe I could take that loss again.

What a lovely tribute to Dinky. I, too, hope all dogs go to heaven. They really do work on our hearts and souls with their devotion and desire to be loved just as they are.

Prayers to you, Anna and Dinky - and to the rest of the furbabies too! I would be lost without my pups. Can't remember a time in my life that I didn't share my life with one (and most of the time more than one). I live in the country - the home my Dad built 68 years ago. I have my own pet cemetery and my kids have followed suit. I know of no one who can offer as much love, loyalty, and trust. I sure hope someday I can greet them all on the other side of the bridge. Your idea would be my idea too! Smiles!

It fells very hard to critique something so personal and emotional. Thank you for sharing this story. The one thing I would say is- I think you should change the title- "Dinky" works way way better in my opinion.
