That is a great way of putting the question about suicide from their POV -
'What will happen if I don't do it? If only more would change their mind.
You've continued filling in the gaps of those years both for Peter and for us reading, enjoyed it.
cheers

I came to this philosophy via personal experience and Allen is speaking very much for me in this chapter. Many thanks for this kind review.

Tom retained his curiosity regarding what would happen? Similar curiosity saved Heather...That part was almost on the border of psycho-philosophy(if I may coin that word...)
The dialogues are frank and straight forward and I liked that.

Many thanks for this review. I must say I like the idea of psycho-philosophy.

Two things about this chapter were particularly strong. First the open dialogue - a very frank affair despite the fact that parts of it were potentially painful for the Baches, focusing on old relationships. Second the question of suicide - and what actually is suicide. I admit I sneaked a look at the ratings to see whether this thorny subject was going to be further resolved, following on from the discussion of Hettie's potential suicide. I was pleased to see that it is a major cornerstone of your trilogy.

Thank you for this review. Yes, suicide is the underlying theme of the whole thing.

hey ya. Ah, suicide, so many different ways of looking at it and doing it, socially, mentally, physically.
How many fellas choose suicde by cop? And one has to wonder about throwing yourelf on a genade. But, oddly, I would do it to sayve those i love...it's only death after all.

Any way, I digresss...but you see I followed that conversation...
and oddly now all I can hear is the theme song from M*A*S*H, Suicide is painless...

There are a surprising number of recorded instances of this selfless behaviour. Some have been rewarded with the Victoria Cross, our top bravery award. Many thanks for reviewing this.

ya, it's an odd thing...it always depends on who does the writing up of the incident...
reply by the author on 17-Feb-2021
Different regiments have different traditions as far as the VC is concerned. In the Royal Marines the incident must be witnessed by at least one person of superior rank. Since may commando operations are involve small numbers there are often too few senior officers around to to qualify.

A soldier in the Korean war was awarded the VC because 'when he ran out of ammunition he threw beer bottles at the enemy. The apocryphal story is that the man was drunk and and didn't realise he still had plenty of ammunition.

oh geez, yes, I'veheard that Korean story before...I know one fella who got the purple heart for being drunk and falling out of the end of a transport truck, and so doing saw a bunch of enemy creeping up from the bushes, he raised holy hell and they fired at the enemy, who melted back into the bush...

The conversation about suicide is fascinating. The following grabbed me, and I couldn't wait to read the answer:
'What I mean is that he asked the one question that can save you, if you are ever thinking of ending it all.'
After reading further, I thought to myself, "What if I don't care about what happens in the future, does that mean I'm ready to commit suicide? Or am I just too intellectually lazy?"
Again, I reached the end thinking that it was too short. I wanted the entire visit in one fell swoop.

The underlying theme of the whole trilogy investigates suicide and its motivating factors, so we shall be returning to it overtly from time to time.

Many thanks for this appreciative six-star review.

Gripping--brilliant dialog!

'Your father, Mrs Joliffe, took his business away from the mill ...
Don't you mean to say MR Joliffe (or are you addressing MRS Bache)?

Thank you for this encouraging review. Yes that one slipped past me. It has been corrected.

    I just checked--it's still there.

So it is! That is odd. It was picked up by another reviewer on day one and I distinctly remember correcting it. Anyway, thanks for double checking. It should have gone now.

-This is a good chapter that
sets the stage for the discussion
between the Bache's and Peter Allen.
-The beginning is descriptive with
the twins coming out to see the car.
-Both sides get some background
information about Tom and the
two fathers and their state of mind.
-In turn, the Bache's learn what
Tom was all about in the army.
-The question Allen put to them
about ending things was very interesting.

Many thanks for this review. The suicide question is, of course the central theme of this trilogy as you have undoubtedly realised.

You are very welcome, and thanks for sharing in your reply. It is not an easy topic to have answers for.

There's plenty of emotion seething under the surface of the dialogue in this chapter. I loved the story of how Warburton threw himself on that grenade, killed himself, but saved Allen in the process. This is a really complicated image that contains the subconscious suicide of Warburton, and also saving the person who is exposing the whole story of the murder of Hettie. Everyone is kind of in this low grade tension as they listen to the story and ask themselves how they played a part in it. And still we have a few loose ends here. How exactly do Tom and Heather factor in this? We await your next chapter, the suspense is growing...estory

Step by step and the truth is coming up, now we see why so many secrets have been kept for so many years. Thank you for sharing and good luck with the next chapter.

Mrs. ought to be Mr. Slip of the fingers Jim, soon fixed.
Here is another episode of interesting reading.
I get the feeling there will be a huge revelation at the culmination of this story. So many small items of information have come to light in just this short time, they make a sizable dent in the unknown content of the story. Now, here's another revelation. Although I did feel that Tommy Bache had a kind and generous nature, there has been no mention of a visit by him to Mr Joliffe, so that is new news.I am enjoying this story so much Jim, I'll be sorry to see it end.
Still, as they say "all good things_ -- --- --"
Cheers Cass

Thank you for this appreciative six-star review. Yes, that Mrs has now been corrected to Mr.

The vist by Bache to Joloffe is indeed a new revelation. Until now we have not entered this time frame so there are a number of new developments.
