To be fair you never told them they had to score points in the game. You just said they had to find a score and show the results. That kid did just that. And I read these all out of order but it's all good. I laughed when I saw y'all. Yep, that's a southern thing. lol. And I liked what you did with those cookies. Even today I might have to figure it out just for cookies.

You'd be surprised what these kids will still do for those chocolate chip cookies - especially if they're still warm. Jan

Heartwarming! You are clearly a talented teacher--I've been enthralled by these chapters--how you fell into it--your first assignment--I had a breakdown during student-teaching!

I read this yesterday, but I waited till today to review so I could use six stars. I'm just loving this story and I'm anxious to learn the outcome of this class, but I'm enjoying the lessons you are using.

You do understand students. Thank you.

I should not have been surprised when he entered the class the next day saying (the following day, has to do with definition)

Thanks for another great episode to your story of how you turned your students' minds to enjoying math for the first time in their lives. What a great achievement and how fun to have cookies to celebrate, too!!

lyenochka: This was back in the day when the cookies were homemade and my neighbor was the one who happened to cook them. Even in 1972, they were a steal for the price they charged. Rdfrdmom2

Ah, a much more innocent time and no worries about wheat and nut allergies etc. When my kids were in school, we had to bring store bought foods only to share with classmates.

You are absolutely right. It is easy to be a teacher of bright kids, but how much more creative we need to be when they are weak at the subject and have negative attitudes. But so very rewarding. Well done!

You are so right, Wendy. I was invited to teach at an Advanced Studies Center where the brightest high school kids in the entire system went for specialized advanced classes. I humbly declined. I had a thirst to teach kids who needed me. Rdfrdmom2

True, Jan. You got them interested in ho/why they were going to need/use math in real life. I enjoyed your post. The students did a great job. I'm sure they enjoyed their cookies.
Respectfully, Jan

Jan, yes, they sure did. They even convinced me to buy a bag for myself and my then boyfriend (now husband of 47 1/2/ years).
Thanks for this nice review. Rdfrdmom2

Talk about making math interesting!! You had me at safety. I wanted to explain all the football positions. Safety is an interesting one. Love the homespun teaching and interaction here.

I have been playing football with the guys since I was 10 because there were no girls in the neighborhood. When I taught, I was a cheerleader sponsor and attended more football games than the law allowed (:}). Anyway, football and baseball are the two sports I love at every level. Thanks for the very nice review. Rdfrdmom2

I really enjoyed reading this chapter - and I learned some math too! Your enthusiasm and respect for your students shines through in your writing. Although, I am left wondering what "playing the deuces" means.
Great read on the eve of Super Bowl Sunday!

In my area, it's what African-American boys call teasing each other a bit harder than most of us would. It took me a good while to understand that, for the most part, it was all done in good fun. I meant to explain it in my author's notes. Thanks for the review. Rdfrdmom2

Teachers are extraordinary people, and teachers who teach math are extra special (I had pretty iffy relationship with math until I was a grown woman preparing for an apprenticeship and had the good fortune to meet an excellent teacher. High praise for What's A Safety. Wishing you good health and happy writing.
