This is such a common occurrence. My Grandmother was a wonderful baker as well, yet none of us was ever privy to the recipe. Also, there were special cookies she made that I cannot find in any cookbooks. So I very much relate to this story.

How clever of your dad to try to use that measuring method. It reminds me of an old story about a wood carver. When asked how he carved a horse out of wood, he said he just cut away everything that didn't look like a horse. Cute story. Glad you shared it.

I enjoyed your story about your Grandma's recipe for bread. What a smart idea your father had. Too bad it didn't work. In my family, there are several recipes we wish grandparents would have written down.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

    Hi Jan,
Yes, I often kid my father about the fact he only tried once. He came so close, why not try again.
Thanks for stopping by to read and review.

Dear debi, there are more secrets to baking bread than just the amount of ingredients. How long you work at needing it on the board, the temperature of the place where you let it rise, and even the number of times you punch it down, will all have an effect, on homemade bread.
I just want to know, if you found it delicious!

The bread was delicious. The absolute best. I wish I had the recipe, and that my grandmother had allowed some help in the kitchen so I could learn how to make it. I've tried a few recipes from friends and recipe books, but nothing measures up. All I can say is that my father and his siblings and my grandpa were spoiled to have homemade bread as a staple.

Well told tale but even more so as my sister and I tried to get Grandma Susie's recipe by measuring each of her handfuls and pinches. still weren't as good as hers were. Glad you were prompted to enter this.

    Hi Carol Hillebrenner,
Thank you for the encouraging comments about the writing. Yes, it is hard to duplicate a well-loved recipe, especially when it's all about the feel. There always seems to be something just a little off about it.
    Thanks for sharing your story.

Interesting story about making bread. So many people do not use written recipes for some things they cook. I remember my mother making bread and I know she just relied on what she knew in her head. Many times they can tell by the feel whether they have used the right ingredients or not.

    Hi Anne Johnston,
You are so right about people and certain recipes. I know I have a couple, but that makes them hard to share. My grandmother made wonderful bread. I wish I had that recipe because none of the ones I've tried quite measure up to it.

You are welcome. Nothing tastes the same as what our mother's made (at least in our memory)

Oh, it's so sad that the recipe is lost! But then again, cooking isn't a science that you replicate with following the exactly steps and ingredients. It's the love that she put in! Was this for a contest?

    Hi Helen,
Thank you for the insightful comments. Yes, it was all about the love.
No, this isn't for a contest. I wrote a review for someone and included this story. The writer (blind contest so I don't know who yet) challenged me to do a flash story. I have trouble writing short so I thought I would practice.

    Hi Roy,
Yes, I guess there are those things you cook so often you just "know" when they are right. Thank you for the kind comments. Enjoy that pea soup.
