A lot of old folks preferred to keep their recipes in their head never wrot anything down, they used a pin gif this and a pinch of that. Nothing was exactly the same.My grandma was the same way she kept them to herself. I learned by trial and era.

Thank you for going back and taking a look at this piece. I appreciate your comments. The recipe is lost. I've got to get my mother to give me a few of those secret recipes only she has in her head too. I'm sure even with my best guess, they won't be the same.

Smiles my great grand mother used to have a very old rumvird cook book she said it was her bike to cooking when she was a young girl.

Cute little story, well told, with a nice twist at the end. So many recipes have been lost to time. Some of my mother's best secret recipes were right out of Fannie Farmer or Betty Crocker. I suspect that also may be true for some others.

This story, Grandma's Lost Bread, has a bittersweet theme as we remember our folks through the things they did that we wish to emulate as a way of honoring them.

Your Dad was a clever guy, debi. too bad it didn't workout though. Who did the kindly gesture of cleaning up? LOL I imagine dad wasn't too pleased about that. Good job on this, dear friend. good luck in the contest. Bob

    Hi Bob,
Thank you for the fun comments. There is no contest for this one. I have trouble writing short so I was giving it a try.

It seems like so many of our 'favorites' from grandparents are family secrets they took with them... sigh. Nowadays, WJ, I'm pretty sure most of the younger folks don't even know how to cook.... make bread? Isn't that just something you get at the store? Why would you want to 'make' it... lol!! ;) :) :) It really is one of those things 'falling out of favor' with the uptick in technology... :) :) Thanx for sharing your true flash, my lady! ;) Yvette :)

You got exactly what I was getting at. There are so many things that we now buy instead of making because we want everything now.

This is such a beautiful tale of tradition and the mysteries of what makes a recipe so magical. I am a baker and can't for the life of me recall how to pass along my recipe in exact duplication. I hope you do well with this entry. It is huge in its brevity.

Thank you for the six stars. You really brightened my day/week.
I envy you being a baker. I so enjoy eating, but being a baker is really artistic work. It sounds like you are especially good at it and that it comes so naturally that it's second nature.

Back in the day most women didn't know what a recipe was. They just learned by watching and doing. I know my mother started paying attention to recipe's in the fifties. Well done, Debi. Nancy:)

    Hi Nancy,
Thanks for the fun review. I suppose you are right about them just learning by watching. Too bad no one thought to do that, or maybe my grandmother didn't like others in the kitchen when she cooked. I never remember her cooking when I was around.

Great flash true story, quite unique. How devious was your dad to think of doing that in order to get the recipe - very clever! Well written, and a very worthwhile post. Enjoyable.

Charming tale--ingenious plan foiled! A shame that the recipe was never pinned down, but it makes a good story. Most likely, she wasn't consistent with the measurements from one time to the other. Thanks for the chuckle.

Yes, I do wish we would have gotten the recipe. But we do have the memories. Thank you for the fun review.
