You are a very good writer. This was amusing and interesting. Sounds like something I might read in Chicken Soup for the Soul books. You might look them up and see if they are printing one about "the salt of the earth" type people. You give people a new appreciation for the people who work a job they maybe never had. Best of luck with this.

In your notes, you said you were writing from memory. You remembered enough detail to provide great imagery. You make Nick's sound like a place I would have loved to go to and eat, twenty years ago. An enjoyable story.

What a great story! Nick's sounds like the perfect neighborhood eatery and the staff! God bless them! I've never waitressed, but have great admiration for those who do...the work is hard and heavy and the payoff seldom commiserate with the demands. I have a feeling, had I had the chance, I would have eaten at Nick's far more often than would have been healthy. Thanks for sharing. Wishing you good health and happy writing.

Great story, Mary! I often wonder how the older women that we often see at restaurants manage to do it all and not collapse. They are to be admired and respected.

I found one little error near the beginning: "the sign at the at Nick's Beef" Too many words here.:)

A great story! You are right -such people are the salt of the earth, honest, and hard-working. Your day there gave you a special insight into their lives and hearts. Well written.

Oh thank you for this marvelous portrayal of that kind of restaurant. I agree waitressing is very hard work and I'm impressed with Rose and Madelyn. My favorite line was: "A ping pong ball saw less action than I did"
So glad you got the desk job!

I do remembe those days when you could get a pitcher of beer for two bucks, honestly looking back I thought that was a bit steep. A fond strol down memory lane.

Mary,

What a fun piece. I'd be scared to even venture a guess at how many hours I've spent waiting tables. *smile* Suffice to say it's been a LOT. But I've also made a lot of money that way, too. A LOT. hahaha

I liked the title to this piece and thought it was extremely creative. Nice. I was really surprised when I got to the end and learned you only spent one day at Nicks. Wow.

Some notes:

1.) the sign at the at Nick's Beef and Beer House
--> delete one of the 'ats'?

2.) busy restaurant known for its shabby chic red and black d?©cor with a fake
--> delete the extra symbols

3.) The qualifications to work as a waitress (were that) you had to be older, sassy and have a sharp tongue.

4.) made no difference to these quick(-)tongue(d) waitresses. They

5.) The first day, however, I would just be bus(s)ing, that is,

6.) "Mareeeee..." (double space) I do not know how

7.) I heard my name (Mary) being screamed over

8.) restaurant floor by Rose pointing to my next table to clear.
--> confusing since you said Rose was laid off, then we don't expect her to be here, right? - also, folks are usually laid off due to lack of work - then why would you be needed? Help?

9.) Rose was right behind me directing me to go in one direction or another.
--> 'direct' x 2
--> also in following sentence

I would normally deduct a star but Ijust can't. This was really enjoyable. Thanks!

    Thanks for your review and kindness. I did corrections already to show that I was laid off.
    thank you for your input.

I loved this. Maybe because I've frequented several similar places. The title and the sign are a stroke of genius. I did notice a few places that could use a little tweaking to smooth a few bumps--listed below.

To qualify to work as a waitress ... (sentence structure)

After I was laid off ... (reads as though your sister were laid off)

"Mareeee." I don't know ... (need punctuation after Mareeee)

I would skip the next "Mary" in the story (superfluous)

It never hurts to use more paragraph breaks to make it easier on the reader.

Great job!
