Great story reminds me of my time as 'hey girl table two ready!' I think Nick being Greek had no time to learn names, and yes I remember him giving a parcel of fish and chips to any old bloke who couldn't pay.

A human interest story with a difference. Sharp characterisation of a kind of roadhouse that sadly no longer exists, a true democracy if ever there was one. Your description of the decor brings the piece to life but not so much as the sketches of those who worked there. I could empathise with you, having worked as a waiter for a month during university holidays many, many years ago. The pay was appalling, but the camaraderie was fantastic, and the job came with a free meal at the end of the day. What more could one ask?

Really good plot, nice description and I can see these waitresses in my mind's eye doing their job, and the customers enjoying their company too! I would just say that the paras are a little random, try tightening them up, or spreading them out more evenly, as it read a little awkwardly, trying to find the next sentence.
But I really enjoyed this, will be looking at your other works!

Thanks for the review. I am sorry that you found it difficult to read. Since this is the only complaint. I will let it stand unless I receive more criticism.
Sorry you did not like the work

I would think this is so cheap in the Harvard Square. It was years ago. I visited Harvard University in 2012 with my family to check out colleges for my son. It was also my chance to visit the famous college. The campus was OK and it's full of restaurants and stores. My son didn't even apply after visiting. He went to UCLA and is very successful now after graduating from there. I love the UCLA campus better.

In my twenties, I also worked as a busgirl for two weeks in a Japanese restaurant, which was enough. I like to exercise but not running around restaurants.

Well done.

What a hit of nostalgia your story is! I can picture the restaurant, and absolutely picture the waitresses. I think most people of a certain age have such a hang-out in their past.
What a better life people would have if there were enough folks out there who knew them by name and made them feel connected.

My only comment re edits would be that there is an inconsistent use of commas. Some sentences that need one don't have it, while others that can do without, do have one. Not an earthshattering issue.

Thanks for a really enjoyable read.

Funny about the commas. I made corrections when someone else had me do take them in and out. I will review again as they may not have been correct
    Thank you for the help.

I waitressed for a few years, and it is hard work, especially at lunch time. You don't have time to breathe, but you always had time for a smile and a happy greeting as the regulars came in. I loved this, Mary, it brought back a few memories, and smiles. Well done. :)) Sandra xx

I worked in the hospitality industry for years and loved every minute of it.Sunday afternoon and into evening was by far the best time to be "on the tables" as that was family time. Saturday nights the drunks and party goers were out in force, but Sunday was the day Mummy got a break from cooking tea and Daddy would take the family to the local hotel where they'd all have a smashing "nosh up"
One Sunday a family of eight came in comprising of grand parents, Mother and Father and four children. The father was a clown and "Made up" to the waitress (yup 'twas me). His two sons watched with sidelong grins as he tickled my leg and asked for my phone number. They were extremely nice customers and I let him play his little games. He was harmless after all. Then, I leaned over and said to HIS MOTHER,"He's your little boy is he Madam?" Huge grins all round with his wife beaming at me.The children got the message and ribbed their father all night. He took it all in good part and left a generous tip.I loved hotel work and did bars as well as table waiting.I have so many happy memories of that time of my life, it is a pleasure to revisit them at times like this, cheers Cass

Well, Mary, based on your description, imagery, and characterization, I am left wishing I could visit a restaurant like Nick's. It seems like a fun place to enjoy a meal for the atmosphere and the price. But it's all because of your writing skill.

An extremely likable tale that brought a smile to my face, and a good lesson, remembering the hard work a waitress goes through with very little appreciation. GOOD JOB!

I enjoyed reading this story. It is true that being a waitress usually requires a lot of work an it helps to be the kind of person that the customers like to have waiting on them. When I was young my Uncle had a small cafe that catered to the working class. I didn't work there as a waitress, but I liked to pretend it did. I'd come in after school and wait tables just for the fun of it. If I'd been paid it would have be hard work and I wouldn't have enjoyed it.
