I totally understand the kicker dude. Our gym final in high school we were given a paper with little stick men drawn on a football field. We had to write who they were. Keep in mind there was no word bank. All I could do was write down the ball kicker, the ball thrower, the ball catcher. I knew I wasn't going to pass it so I turned it in in record time. I knew when she got to mine because she almost fell off of her chair laughing. She let me pass, I think it was all the creativity I had with that. And a teacher that can make the kids feel comfortable about learning and helping them feel safe, like pulling shades over the windows and stuff, is the best. We all learn differently and have our own insecurities.

I love that your teacher appreciated your creativity and willingness to try even though you didn't have a clue what the right terms were. Good for her. Jan

Hahaha, she probably dated the dude. I enjoyed your continuing story, Jan. You are right to use real life experiences to reach the seemingly unreachable students. They will be learning despite their aversion to it. Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

I enjoyed your story. You held my attention to the end and made me want to read more. This also makes me want to root for the kids in the class. Good job.

One of my sons' teaches high school math. The freshman, and he says they don't know their multiplication facts. I've told him he has to back and teach the basics or they won't learn anything because they don't have the basics. It's sad.

Barbara. I believe him. It's because too many schools allow students to use calculators beginning in third grade.

I got chills reading this! In my first class of fourth graders, I got all the jocks. All they cared about was sports. So, they had to figure out things like real batting averages. I did exactly what you with football. I also put up a score like 23-35 and asked them to list all the possible ways that score could come about. They loved it. We also "studied" geography/social studies via team names. Vikings. Packers, Steelers, Cowboys, etc. Even though I prefer to work alone and march to the beat of my own drummer, I think you and I would have made a great team!

Hi Jan. I like your style of writing and I feel I will enjoy reading about your days as a teacher. It is interesting to say the least. However.....did I miss something hear? I did not get the point of the story in the way you ended it? Just me, maybe. Bless you. Bob

Yes, find the connection with their world - the first step in getting engagement. It has to be relevant. Looking forward to reading your stories and comparing them with my own. Well written.

This is exciting stuff! I feel your students getting enthused about learning math! It's cute that Brian reminded you of the score. You didn't need to check the paper.
My only suggestion is to not tell what you asked Sally but "show" us with a direct dialogue: "why she called the kicker a dude."

Excellent chapter. Your terrific dialog certainly moved the story forward. A great story is one that the reader wants more of. This qualifies for sure. Thanks
