It is sad not to smile. A true smile can be seen in the eyes and heard in the voice. It doesn't only show in the mouth covered by the mask.
Good luck in the contest.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

Very nice ...one day we will get back to normal if normal exists. Got a chuckle with this posting. Little late and just took a look before closing out..saw this and read it. Glad I did. Good work.

That's cute! But why "Seize the Wind?" Is this a sailboat thing? You might put a note about that. I don't know many sailing cats.
I smile anyway - they might see the eyes and eyebrows change. Or I might say something, hum, wave. Lots of options.

Yes, some people say you can tell by someone's eyes if they're smiling. I don't have eyes that look like I'm smiling. When I'm not smiling, I have what people call a "resting angry face." People ask me why I'm mad, when I'm not. It's kind of annoying, really. I think people can tell from my voice though, if I'm smiling. But sometimes I don't have anything to say.

Yeah, the "carpe ventum" saying is a sailing thing. Another friend remarked the same thing! He recommended drawing a dog on the bow of a boat. So that's my next project. LOL!

Great idea! Don't stop smiling... it appears in your eyes if it is sincere.
That's where you should be looking. Masks that make people smile are sorely needed so I hope you go for it.

I like making masks. I just mailed two to my parents yesterday. I have a friend in Switzerland who says she prefers store-bought disposables. I like my cloth ones since they are more personalized. I have sharks on my favorite one. I initially bought the material to make boxers for my ex-boyfriend. But that was 20 years ago. Who guessed they would go towards making coronavirus masks instead! LOL!

This one gave me a chuckle, reminded me somewhat of a child throwing a tantrum, "I don't have to because I don't want to!" I believe however, that the best smiles are seen in the eyes. :) Thanks for sharing.

I totally agree with your poem and author's notes. The man in line in front of me at the supermarket said, "I smiled, but you couldn't tell because of my mask." He was right. In your poem, I like the line, "cause I don't need to." It expresses the feeling most people have. What a shame. I really like your poem. Well done.
