Lovely story, we all want to know how did we come to this land and who made the first step towards a new life in a strange world: "
I wonder how well acquainted these two men were? What would they think of having a 10th great-granddaughter in common?

As I ponder that four hundred years ago my 10th great-grandfathers met, I have to smile at the way they have met again. Funny how history repeats itself." Thank you for sharing and good luck with our writings.

Wow! How cool! My cousin were trying to do a family tree for our family, but I've not heard anymore about it. Maybe it's nothing to brag about. =] This is very well written and interesting. I'm more impressed that you are related to Chief Massasoit. I love Native American history. Well done.

Thank you for the insightful comments. Give your cousin some time. Those family trees can take a while to put together.
I was super excited to find out about Chief Massasoit. There used to be a statue of him at our state capitol. They moved it a few years ago, I think to a museum. I remember admiring the statue every time I went downtown. If I'd only known...

W.J.DEBI:

This is an absolutely fascinating story. I am often surprised when
sitting around talking with friends when we discover we are related
within 3- 4 generations. Asa result, I refer to almost everyone as
"cuz". Thanks for sharing.

It's fascinating to think about where and who we come from, and to be able to trace your bloodline in such a straightforward way is awesome. It's a shame the Native Americans weren't better treated for their contributions to American life.
I do have to wonder if the men really met though, since Thomas remained on the ship. But it's great you're keeping in touch with your ancestors; one side in particular would have appreciated that. Cheers.

    Hi Tsukuyomi969,
Thank you for the thoughtful review.
I agree that the Native Americans should have been treated better. They did a lot to help us get started on these shores.
Your review is a great reminder that not everyone is familiar with early U.S. history. I think I may go back and add that the Mayflower was blown off-course and did not reach the destination they originally intended. The women and children and the old men (we would say older nowadays) were left on the ship while the younger men went to scout the area where they did land. If the younger men ran into unfriendly forces they would have a better chance of getting back to the ship. Luckily, they ran into friendly Native Americans and everyone got off of the ship to start the colony. The Indian village and the Plymouth colony were nearly back to back so they saw each other daily. My ancestor Thomas died sometime during the winter, but was around long enough to interact with the Indians, and he was a close enough friend with William Bradford (the leader) that Mr. Bradford took in Joseph after Thomas died.
I have no doubt he met Massasoit. How much they interacted is the question.

How fascinating! Four hundred years of family history! What an incredible story, and it will certainly lend focus to further research of your family tree. Interesting and well written.

Good job. I enjoyed reading about the history of your family. I like how you tied two ancestors together at the end. It made me curious as to how you discovered all the information. That would add an extra element to your essay that would probably be of interest to many people. You do mention research and I think it would be great to know more about that.

    Hi Dana Starr,
Thanks for the great review and letting me know what worked and what you would like to see.
It's funny, I did have some information about the research in the essay, but I took it out. It seemed too dull to me. Going through pedigree charts, birth, census and death records, just sounds uninteresting to me. It reminds me of when someone wanted to watch me train a horse. They got bored. It's just hours of repetition.

Loved this!! Wow! To have both first settlers and Native American heritage in your ancestry is so amazing! My daughter is on a similar kick and has taken my husband's ancestral roots back to Medieval Europe. She found two Mayflower passengers in her ancestry.

    Hi Helen,
So your daughter's ancestor and mine might have known each other. How fun.
On my Mom's side, I've gotten as far back as William the Conqueror. One of our Norman ancestors helped him conquer the Saxons. I joke we are the bad guys in the Robin Hood and Ivanhoe stories.

Wow! Interesting. I hope you'll give us some history lessons as I don't know much about that time period!

LOL. I only know what I've seen in the movies and read in the two novels. I'll have to do a lot more research.
