Since tonight is New Years Eve, I get the message of this story to mean that last year was bad and now we have to face the bills of this new year and hope that the cost wont be as bad as the last.

You've provided a much needed chortle to end the year. Great drama and anticipation for the twist at the end. A good take on post Christmas spending too. I really feel for the folks who are in dire straights right now. But, at least we can laugh.

Thank you. I hated paying bills back in the day when checks had to be written. I do online banking now, and it's not so bad.

Enjoyed the twist ending. Thought the build up you had to this piece was wonderful because you made me believe that your character was going to be slaughtered in a very grotesque fashion but then again those taxmen in Washington can be very frightening. Well done.

Thank you. I always hated paying bills, but now I bank online. So much better. When my youngest son was still home, he would write out the checks and I'd sign them. Whew! (Long before all the technology we have now.)

A very well-written short story about the sentence that starts the story with "It's happening tonight ..." It seemed to balance the books and paying the bills is a nightmare during this hard times.
