This is a great life-lesson. One we all should remember. Something I tend to forget. My daughter often used to say, stop being so judgemental, mom. Your poem is well-written, a great story. Thank you for sharing it with us. Good luck with your contest.

Thank you so much for the great review and comments. We all tend to judge but I ended up with a tattooed son-in-law and a daughter who has some as well. I'm not as judgmental as I once was.

Dear Beth, every time you post a poem I am truly moved by both your theme and the outstanding skill of your writing!
The illustration that you found to post with this story is a perfect match.
I am so glad that God sent an angel to you that day!

Thank you Suzanna for the great review and comments. I'm glad you liked . That picture reminded me a lot of the man we saw that day. I really appreciate the six stars.

I know a man like that, he looks so scary, but he's the gentlest soul you could wish to meet. We should never jump to conclusions, because you would miss such a lot by not getting to know them. I really liked your story in a poem, Beth, very well done and good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

Thank you so much for the review and contest. I wrote a story about this incident back in 1997. I had no idea then that one day I would have son-in-law with many tattoos and I a daughter who thought they were cool as well. My son-in-law is a gem. Maybe this guy helped me to be more accepting.

Hello Beth,
This is an excellent story in a poem and entry for the contest
with very good rhyming throughout in the AABB pattern.
Sounds like you were luck on that day; a happy ending
"with a good lesson from the "don't judge a book (or person) by the cover"
theme.
Excellent picture choice.
Nicely done.
Good luck in the contest.
Robert

This is a fine story and a tribute to a stranger who offered his help without expecting anything in return. I loved your rhymes and flow here Beth, although the meter lost it's way toward the end, I still loved the sentiments and the kindness that still exists out there, an uplifting and fine story, love Dolly x

Quite a story--so sweet that your angel charged you only enough to cover his next tattoo.

Kin(ship) = relation(ship) -- meaning that you visit your kin (i.e. your relatives); you don't visit your kinship/relationship.

since "kin" in itself won't rhyme with trip, sugg:

My mate and I were on a drive
Cruising along at fifty-five

Thank you for the great review. Actually the part belonged to his uncle. He called and the uncle wanted twenty dollars. The guy would charge anything for his time. He said fooling with cars was his hobby.
I'd like to make the changes you suggest, but relationship has too many syllables and a drive sounds too short. This was a 300 mile trip. (Maybe I can think of something else)

Beth--I mean that the word kinship is like relationship-- i.e. you visit the people (kin/relatives), not "relationships."

Loved your story, Beth! It's such an important one - because we do tend to judge by looks but God will always help us stretch our minds about what an angel might look like. Hope you do well in the contest!!

Thank you Helen, I really appreciate the review and comments. I'm not sure what we would have done without him.

Reminded me of my son-in law tattooed from one end to the other but would give you his last dime. He is a driller of oil on the rigs. I enjoyed this contest piece. Best wishes in the contest.

Thank you Chuck. I wrote a short story about this when it happened by in 1997. Since then I too have a Tattooed angel for a son-in-law.
He had welding factory and he also would give you his last dime.

When I first read it, I thought of how the cadence is like a song or would make a good song, and I actually imagined Bob Dylan singing it. Love those hard rhymes and beat and also how much fun it was to read it.

We humans are terrible, it's clear in James that we prefer the well dressed and the talented and ignore those that society rejects, and yet God precludes nobody the opportunity to know. This is beautifully written Beth, a great example of knowing how God feels, beautifully written Beth, blessings Roy
