If it weren't for the last sentence that clearly leads on to the next episode, I would have thought this a short story in it's own right. It was a very enjoyable read with it's own beginning, middle and end even though it is a chapter in a longer work.

With a robbery happening in her building, Maddie is concerned. However, her decision to visit the police station doesn't seem to give her any advantage. It's an interesting story that hasn't quite given any discerning plot, to date. But it looks like something is about to happen.

Yes, this should be a full-length novel, Ralf, so we aren't even scratching the surface yet. I wanted to spend a few chapters showing Maddie in her world, letting readers just see her in her surroundings. Since this is a "cozy" mystery, there can't be a bloody murder in the first scene; readers of this genre tend to like to eavesdrop on the characters for a bit before delving in. And yes! Something IS about to happen!
