This is such a sad poem. It is horrible to lose a pet this way and on the day after Christmas. I know how you feel. My dog, Shadow, died three years ago. But she died easily in my lap at the vet's office after he put her out of her pain.
Congrats on the well deserved contest win.
Keep writing and stay healthy.

What a beautiful tale.....I see why you won and congratulations....One of my fist shaking discussions with the Lord above came at 10 years old when we had to put down an old family dog. I felt he should let our pets live as long as we do......Godspeed and Best Wishes.....Stu Harrell

Beautifully told! We can all relate to depth of loss that a dear furry friend is. And we always have regrets about things we might have done differently. What was the cause of the bloated stomach?
Suggestion:
can't loose another pup to this (lose)
Congratulations on the win!!

Jesssica, congrats on your win for this heartrending story. You make it painfully clear that Sage was a precious creature who will be forever mourned. Well done. Condolences. LIZ

Jessica,

I'm so sorry. I have lost pets in my own life and it is tragic every time. We had to put one of our favorite, most wonderful dogs down once and that absolutely broke my heart to pieces - so I get it. And I'm sending you lots of hugs --

This piece was really well-written and full of feeling. I do have a couple notes for you -- you are welcome to use them or toss 'em, as you prefer.

1.) Seeing her l(ie) there sedated under that florescent light and watching the vet remove her stomach in order to flip it back over was a nightmare and I prayed a mile(-a-)minute.

2.) I could have done to prevent this from happening? When the surgery was (over/completed)
--> to avoid using 'done' x2

3.) they sewed my precious friend back up. After she was cleaned up,
--> 'up' x2

4.) go home to my (two-)year(-)old who needed her mommy.
--> spell out numbers under ten
--> I think there's another place later - please check

5.) I allowed people to comfort me and I allowed myself to cry.
--> suggest 'grieve' - you had already described your crying over her, right?

Thanks so much. (Still worth a five!) Good luck!

Thank you for your review; I'll take a look at your notes. Sometimes I have a hard time wording my writings. I usually have someone proof-read them but hadn't on this one. Thanks again:)

What a heart-wrenching story and loss at the same time. You did a great job telling of your precious Sage. I know how hard it is to lose a member of the family--been there many times. She had your love for the best 5 years of her life. Do you know of Rainbow Bridge? Google, it. Thanks for sharing. I know this was so hard to write.
Best wishes.
Respectfully, Jan

It was. I almost cried everytime I reread it. Thanks for reading it. I've never heard of Rainbow Bridge but I'll look at it. Thanks.

The lost of a pet is so hard, I lost my baby cat last year, and she will be forever in my heart. Every time I think about her, I feel exactly like you. Thank you for sharing and good luck with the contest. P.S. Sage is watching over you...
