I can see why this is a contest winner. You have touched ion a subject that is becoming more and more of a problem. Drugs, alcohol, PTSD, and a traumatic childhood are the main reason for this terrible situation. I don't see a solution to this problem in the near future.

You are right, it's a terrible problem with no real solution in sight. It's also heartbreaking to witness. Thank you for reading.

This is a sad and touching poem that tugs at the heartstrings because it is so true. There is someone I know who was once a professional and now she walks the streets pulling her little cart behind her and wearing a huge overcoat and hat regardless of the weather. She used to come into the store where I once worked at take food and we let her, but we always paid for it. I'm told that she suffers from schizophrenia. I feel sad when I see her but she doesn't seem sad. She always smiles when I see her and I think she remembers me, but maybe it's just a front she projects.

It's interesting what you say about her not being sad. I ask my son sometimes if he's sad and the answer is always no...it's just me that's sad for him. Thank you so much for this insightful review.

You are so welcome. It is strange isn't it. In a way, I guess it's a blessing that they feel whole within themselves and our sadness if for what we think they're missing out on.

It is easy to see why this poem won the contest. We quickly sympathize with the homeless woman who talks to someone she can't see and the Speaker who truly understands because she has a son who also hears voices all the time. You vividly describe this homeless woman, especially her face. Rod

Thank you for reading my poem. I'm going through a crisis with my son, so I reposted this to bring more awareness to the plight of the mentally ill. Thanks again.

This is a well written poem about the sad effects of mental health problems have on the person and those around them, whether family or strangers. Sorry to hear about your son. Aren't their medications that help.
I like the repetition in the first and last stanzas.
Congrats on the win.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Joan

I like your poem. It says a lot about homeless people, who have no shoe laces or clothing, and also have no place to lie their weary head. Each year I try to clean out my closet and dresser drawers to help the homeless.

That's wonderful. If everyone did that, it would be a tremendous help. Thank you for reading and for this great 6 star review. :)

Totally drawn into the life of this woman. Maybe because I ask the same questions. "Who did she talk to and what did she see?
How she acted did not scare me at all." I see the homeless and mentally ill people on the city streets everyday, and I think: "There but for the grace of God, go I" Thanks for sharing and All the Best, K

This poem has everything. It is my vote in this contest. Grieving is not always related to death. We grieve for the past. We also grieve for the current situations that surround us every day. But what can we do about it? What change can we do? The smallest thing to help the lost and unfortunate.

This is such a moving poem. Its vividly descriptive lines provide a heart-wrenching look at those who not only have mental illnesses, but are also homeless, having no safe place to sleep, eat--to be!

A very well-written heartfelt story/poem about the homeless who often also have mental problems and are not trusting anyone around with anything. We can only imagine what they're going through.

As someone whose uncle talked to a person no one could see. I could emphasize with the writing of this homeless person.
Well done writing about the plight of the homeless and particularly of those with mental illness.
good luck in the contest.
