Hello Beth
I liked your prose about viewing elk during rutting season;
while you were taking a walk in elk country.
I found your authors note very interesting.

I enjoyed reading your contest entry. I was surprised by your comment that the Cherokee depleted the herds because I had always heard that the Native American's were natural conservationist and it was White Man that messed things up. Hmm, now I am wondering. Good luck with the contest.

Thank you so much Barbara I really appreciate the review and comments. The White man pushed the Cherokee into such a small area that they had to kill what game was around in order to survive. I'm sure they didn't want to deplete the herds but they needed food
This is in the area of the Cherokee reservation.

This poem, I Walk in Elk Country, presented in three, nine-syllable-lined octaves, captures this yearly ritual and its importance to the existence of these majestic creatures.

Thank you for the review and for the comments. It is an interesting ritual to witness. Sometime the Bull have to fight to keep someother male from trying to claim their harem. The animal kingdom is amazing.

WOW! You took this pic???? BRAVE WOMAN! :D I love the rhyme and meaning with this too. I've seen videos of people, one guy who was sitting down because a young bull was standing over him with antlers ready. It was going to stab him good. Elk and even buck deer can be dangerous! Nice work Beth. S.

Thank you Susan, I wasn't that close too him. I was using a lens that was made from taking pictures at a distance. There were park rangers around to make you didn't get too close and you stayed near your car. I remember seeing that picture too. I really appreciate the six stars.

The Male sure can't dally around, can he, only having such a short window of time. I imagine he's loving life and every female around in those two days, lol. Probably needs the year to recuperate. I didn't know they lost their horns. Your poem is well-written, very interesting, educational.

We have them now back in Arkansas. My son has a trophy in his den collections. As you say, they can put on show especially during rutting season.
Very nice poem. Thanks for sharing.
