Your Celtic Rose is a refreshing change from the somewhat sing-song effect of the traditional sonnet forms. The rhyme scheme is subtle but still gives structure to the poem. The variations in rhythm also add interest. I must give it a go sometime.
I enjoyed reading your extensive author note and felt that the atmosphere you created in your poem did justice both to the grandeur of the place and the sense of history. 'Vaunted faces' was a particularly effective coinage. I remember many of those in the portraiture of gothic edifices in Europe!

Thanks so much for the sixer again and all your wonderful comments. I wanted to create a poem that would capture the atmosphere of Biltmore, the character of it, and I hope I was successful. estory

Beautiful descriptions, but the line that it impressed me the most was this one: "Perched on the parapets, gargoyles like birds..." there is something so sweet, maybe it is because I like birds, they employ flight, dreams, unreality. So much more to say.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and your wonderful comments supporting the poem. Its always great to hear which lines specifically work well from readers. In that line though, I was probably thinking of ravens, something frowning and intimidating. I wanted to capture the intimidating feel of Biltmore, contrasting with the glorious, liberating setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains. estory

'Biltmore", is an extremely well-written, and deftly descriptive piece. Penned with craft and skill, this talented poet tells it as he sees it. You KEEP WRITING, and I'll KEEP READING. I look forward to seeing your next post.

Hi estory, yes, I enjoyed this poem and I enjoyed what it actually said. I agree with you, the view to mountains would have been a welcome escape from the opulence. Very well written. Ulla:)))

This sonnet is easy to read and understand. I enjoyed the history it told about Biltmore and the Vanderbilts and the form you used to write this. Well done!

What a beautiful poem about such an elegant place. It reminded me of "The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art" in Sarasota, Florida and the Getty Villa, in Los Angeles, both of which are in Venetian style.

I have been to France four times, three in Paris and once in Nice. I have seen many Gothic styled palaces in southern Germany where my relative has a castle.

A very nice poem. I also like Gloria's work a lot.

Do you know Jim Rash, a FanStoryian and also lives in NC. He is taking the Metre class with me.

Thanks again for the six star reivew and all your supporting remarks. Gloria is one of the greats of sonnet writing here. I can't say I know Jim Rash. I've been to a few castles in Germany. I got a private tour of one where my father was stationed in World War II. I love history and old houses and trying to devine the character of them and articulate the spirit of the place. Most of them are probably haunted...estory

I did write a short story called "A Haunted Castle" and won the "Thriller and Horror" contest here. I took the picture of the castle that belongs to my-brother-in-law's wife family.

A very well-written heartfelt sonnet about a place called Biltmore where there is fresh air and high mountains to make it an idyllic place revealing some history about the place as well.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and your wonderful comments supporting the poem. Biltmore is a lovely place outside Asheville. But a window on the soul of the Vanderbilts as well. The contrast between the house and the setting is what got me thinking of writing this poem to fit in my book, Carolina Pastorals. estory

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have sooo much money, you could build a magnificent landmark. People would marvel over it for years, can you believe how that would feel? Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the excellent review and for your interesting perspective on the poem. Well, part of what I was trying to say here is that money isn't everything. Biltmore is kind of a frowning, intimidating place, and after walking around its dim, grey, frowning halls for a time, pacing the over embellished rooms, you kind of long for those wild, free mountains out back. estory

This is a beatiful poem and I enjoyed reading it. I think the words paint a picture all by themselves and I am glad you didn't add a visual one as, I think, this might have diluted the power of the words. Thank you for sharing and stay safe.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and your wonderful comments supporting the poem. My work tends to rely much on poetic images, so I am glad those worked so well in the poem and conjured this powerful image of the frowning house and the wild, open spaces of the mountains. estory

I love history and a bit of mystery and this lyrical write speaks to both, with the descriptions of the architecture beautifully painted and the reference to 'echoes of their footsteps' on the marble floors. You well did what you set out to do.
