I like the structure, scenes depicted, and the flow. I like the word choice and the imagery. Living in the past and refusing to forgive yourself for mistakes that cannot be undone can really hold you back. Knowing that God forgives and loves you gives you freedom and a desire to live in the present and move forward.

This abcb quatrain poem tells of how faith can keep the past from ruining your
present and future. It is very hopeful for those who are in a dark place that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck in the contest.

Keep writing

The spectres of my past laid bare,
exposed by Heaven's Son,
in God I trust, my lamp burns strong,
their hold on me is gone.

I think faith chases away any ghosts that might intrude in
our lives. I was left with three little lads to bring up alone after years of mental and physical abuse, but my faith put all dark, unsettling thoughts and ghosts of the past behind me and pulled me through, making me a stronger person.

Your poem should do well in the contest, Roy - good luck.

Margaret

"The spectres of my past laid bare,

The last stanza sums up the gist of your poem, which is "in God I trust" lovely.

We all go through the dark soul of the night, be it ghosts
of the past that haunts us or present pain that will not assuage, but we have God for comfort and for rest and He will not tempt us beyond what we can bear. Keep writing.

Hi Roy - this is a very well written poem with good abcb rhyme form. You have approached this prompt on ghost/ghosts with the imaginary ghosts of the mind. Those that haunt you in a fearful way. But as always you bring in your faith in God with a lovely final stanza. Good luck in the contest. Warm regards Dorothy x

'Rubbed raw by horror's rasp' is a splendid line! It rolls off the tongue so well! Your device of taking the shadows one step further and writing of wraiths of shadows certainly set the scene, underscoring the sense of being hopelessly lost before being found by your Saviour.

Well done. You won victory over your ghosts of the past
through His grace. Years ago I moved my family into a house,
that we soon discovered, was haunted, very haunted. I really
couldn't afford to move out at the time. After a lot of strange
happenings, my stepfather bought a crusifix for each room.
I put them over the kids beds and the crib . The visits stopped.
