a very well written graphic diatribe on we as a species, where emotions can turn cold when faced with a situation that we cant easily emotionally deal with or we have got enough emotional strength with trying to help, good stuff

OUCH!!! I can relate to this one. It is always such a hard decision to know what to do when you drive by a homeless person on the side of the street. We have so much and sometimes I am numb like you mentioned and don't do something. I wish I could say that I stop and at least give them food, but no I don't and that is the sad part. I think your poem does a good job of showing how life really is. It is a tough one, filled with tough decisions and sometimes we make the right ones, sometimes we just don't know what to do and other times we just walk on by.

Oh my goodness. What a write here. How honest to speak for yourself, yet so many of us see this and do the same thing. There are truly people in need and others who park their cars and hang out begging all day. Insane. I found it interesting the words you used big-box-mart. Is that a common term for the wallyworld W-Mart? It caught my attention because there are these strange signs along a road near my house that says save our "..." street No Big Boxes. Now, I am wondering if they are trying to build a W-Mart on that small road. :)
Anyway, congrats. Your poem clearly fit the contest and deserved a win. May we all stop and help when we discern there is truly a need. :) Bless you for your honesty. You make us all think. ~Yona

and unfortunately they're famous for giving low prices because they import cheap cheap stuff from 3rd world countries - so the guy in America who is sitting out of work is sitting there for guess what reason? hmmmmm ...

Very honest write. Amazing how easily we drive past those in need versus offering a helping hand. Congrats on your win, well deserved. Cheers, Charlotte

You could at least wave at me when you go by! I see you and I know where you live! Will work for stars.

Seriously, it is a tough one. And your poem depicts it well. Maybe this is self justifying but the truth is, some people would starve and be homeless in paradise unless somebody spoon fed them. (Sigh) What to do? Lord, help me to sort out and help people who really need help from the freeloaders and true bums. And then lead me to them to offer real help.

That is always the quandray, Deniz, isn't it? Part of me wants just to take everyone home, and the other part of me is repulsed and suspicious. Crazy society, but I think that's probably how it's always been. We just don't expect it in such a wealthy country for some reason. Why not? Self interest and self preservation really don't change, do they? thx for your thoughtful review, my dear! :)S

I like the two-fold nature of this poem. It looks at society's self-righteousness and how it treats the homeless and, by extension, the mentally ill. This is the dark underbelly of our society few want to face or better yet tackle. I can see why you won with this one, congratulation!

Thx so much T9! yes, I drive past this guy most days, and I feel myself numbing out ... angry at our wealthy society that doesn't take care of its own, and angry at myself for continuing to drive past ... it's a hard one ...

Not sure where the equality is in this poem, and I do not care. The poem is absolutely wonderful. I think this is how a lot of people act in this world today. Great Job!!

You are the other side of brilliant, me girl! What a beautifully worked poem following the rules of the competition to the tee. It is cold and dark and the stark contrast in the retarded boy begging and the empty headed spending of the well to do was excellent.
Well done
You're a star

Wow, nice. A little confusing for me but that is just me. But the descriptive words used together were absolutely the best descriptive sequence I have read in a very long time. Good job.
