I remember this O. Henry story! I think I read it in 8th grade! "The Cop and the Anthem!" The main character's name is Soapy! It is one of the very few stories I actually read, though I had claimed to have read the entire collection! I think your poetic rendering is absolutely fabulous! I also quiver now in my boots, because I had thought I was in the clear until you entered the contest... Darn it!
My favorite lines in your poem are
"Philosophy found that on stony ground
his seed had been invested"
because of the allusion to Christ's parable (of how and where best to sow seeds), which nicely foreshadow's your protagonist's discovery of the church and Christmas prayer, and because of the really clever rhyme.
This is awesome, as your writing usually is! I am out of sixers, but please know that you have a virtual six from me!
Yours,
Steph

Steph, thanks for the wonderful review and the reminder about the title.
I am not so sure about my chances in the contest and I shall certainly keep my eyes open for your entry.

The rhythm of this poem is so good you can almost sing it. A cleverly written story in poetic form. I'll have to look up those O Henry tales.
Blessings in the contest! LaVonne

Thanks, LaVonne.
The O. Henry stories are well worth a read. I first discovered them many years ago in High School and quite a few of them have stuck in my memory. Now I'm enjoying them all over again. My favourite is 'The Ethics of Pig'.

I really enjoyed this narrative Steve. Your verses are beautifully scripted and have immaculate meter. The poem bounces along at a good pace, making the narrative palatable and easy to follow. Your character's meagre life is exposed an his somewhat basic philosophical outlook explained. The irony of his conversiona nd final arrest is charmingly told and leaves a bitter sweet after-taste. I found thay our use of reflective and actual dialogue gave the character a sense of humanity, and that your whole approach was tinged with gentle humour and respect for the original tale.
