This really does put a new slant on magic mushrooms! What a lovely poem, Tony, written in perfect quatrains with loads of delicious alliteration in,
dormancy of dreams undone by dance, and in other lines which made the poem a delight to read. I like to believe there are fairies at the bottom of my garden, but then, I've always been fanciful. :)) Beautiful, my friend. :) Sandra x

Many thanks, Sandra, for your review and comment about some of the phrases used. As a child, I actually saw fairies in white robes and winged hats through the hedge at the bottom of my garden. I rushed to report the fact to my family who were picnicking on the lawn. They were much amused. We lived next door to a nunnery at the time! Best wishes, Tony

Hi Tony,

I absolutely love the alliteration in this wonderfully rhymed poem comprised of ABAB quatrains. Mushrooms and faeries go do together and I always enjoy the fanciful writes of their realm. This is wonderful work!

My favorite stanza:

Let lambent leaves of oak shake off the shade,
Let wind and withy spindles spin and sway,
But in the faerie circle all things fade.
All those who enter in are trapped by fey,

Bravo!!

Kim

A masterfully crafted riting on a phenomenon
that is fascinating. I love how you have connected the concept of the fairy ring. This is well written. I like the sensual and sensory elements.

Blessings,

Brother Badger

absolutely delightful!
every verse, enchanting.
I love "withy spindles" - will have to look up withy. You are certainly teaching me new - and lovely - words.
I hope you are making a book for your grandchild - in the picture.
Thank you for the pleasure your poem gives.

Many thanks, Katharine, for your review and six star award. Much appreciated. I had one of Tom Bombadil's songs from Tolkein's Lord of the Rings in the back of my mind when I wrote 'withy spindle'. He lived by a willow lined river called the Withywindle:

Hop along, my little friends, up the Withywindle!
Tom's going on ahead candles for to kindle.
Down west sinks the Sun: soon you will be groping.
When the night-shadows fall, then the door will open,
Out of the window-panes light will twinkle yellow.
Fear no alder black! Heed no hoary willow!
Fear neighter root nor bough! Tom goes on before you.
Hey now! merry dol! We'll be waiting for you!

wonderful words and song and lovely name for a river. I never read or saw Lord of the Rings - might have to try it.

I have always known faeries live in the oak grove to the left of my house. Now, I will check under the mushrooms. Of course, it's really too hot in Texas for mushrooms. LOL I so enjoyed reading your poem.

Very many thanks for your review, Barbara. No mushrooms? How sad. But at least you have fairies! LOL

This is a lovely poem. Good use of alliteration and rhyme. I just noticed my neighbor's yard yesterday with quite a few mushrooms. I will be wary of fairies dancing, lol.

Ive seen them around large tombstones in perfect circles. We as children were told they were witches circles but I like your ABAB much better. Very nice

Thanks, Barb. Yes, in some folklore myths there is also an association with witches. All the best, Tony

Fantastic! Love the holding the scent of dark seductive night.

Such lovely alliteration, and the wording is beautiful. Well done, as always.

A wonderful sense of poetic mystique portrayed here in these quatrains emanating from that visceral space 'the faerie circle' where all who enter are 'trapped by fey'- a feast for the imagination
