This was a cute little story that I could totally see happen at my granny's house! Thank you for sharing. Good luck in the contest.
Technical thoughts:
- Dialogue needs to be separated by speaker, so here:
I ask her, "Grandma, after being your boyfriend for twenty five years why are marrying him now?" She said, "his wife died three months ago."
'She said' should be a separate paragraph.
There are several instances of this occurring throughout, and it jarred me out of the story for a minute.
And there are some comma issues, but those didn't take me out as hard. If you're interested, let me know. Otherwise, I enjoyed the story.

Thank you reading. I apologize for jarring you out of the story. That is just my style. I do appreciate your thoughts.

Not a problem. Thank you for not yelling at me. :-)

LOL, you are way too dang educated for me to yell at you. I did try to clean up some it. Thanks again.

I can just imagine the tension around that table. Women who cook sometimes get a little testy about things. Up until the 1990s, I made everything from scratch, three times a day. Now, I nuke everything. lol. Looking forward to more stories like this. Good luck in the contest.

"Grandma Bessie & Thanksgiving" gives an interesting background story that is filled with facts. That is what I really enjoyed most, the build up to telling about the yellow cornmeal dressing. Well done.

I really liked your story. I had the pleasure of growing up through the 50's and 60's so I understand the significance of family and Thanksgiving. My mother and her mother-in-law (my Grandma "Maws") got along great until it came to certain dishes served at Thanksgiving. The memories that your story brought back were great. Your story telling was superb.

A delightful story about Thanksgiving and your Grandmother, and her cornbread dressing. I especially liked the paragraph: "My mother once told me she was going to the store to get some ingredients for supper. I said, "but mommy, I don't like ingredients!" She explained that there were good ones and bad ones, and she was only going to get the good ones, and I would like them. Turns out she was right."

Of course, it has to be yellow corn meal without food coloring. One can't live in Texas, or the south, without yellow cornbread and/or dressing. I enjoyed your contest entry. Your did a good job with the back story, too. Your Grandma Bessie sounded like a fun person.
Best wishes in the contest.
Respectfully, Jan

I like the 'family' feeling of this story and feel almost as if I know them. You did really well with the characters and making them come alive for the reader. Each of the primary characters got just a little extra personality point i.e. Grandma Bessie's 25 year affair, your mom's middle-child syndrome causing her to want to out do Grandma Bessie (I suffer from the same syndrome) and your dad's enjoyment of a good glass of wine was thrown for good measure.
As an aside, I had an Aunt 'Minnie' and the grandmother who died many years before I was born was also named 'Minnie'. I never knew it was rather common name.

Very cute. . .never mess with an old (er) lady. . .she'll get even, for sure. People are so funny and the older we get the more set in our ways we get. I've discovered those older folk can really be grumpy and have no filter on what they think or say. . .that's just the way life is. I'm hoping when I get there, I plan for it to totally different. Ya right, but I can hope I'm not that way. :)

Interesting story telling. I love the memories of old times and the households of the years in the past. No TVs on, nobody looking at the phone at the table, fewer interruptions. Good story. :)

Ah, this is great! I loved dressing and as you said, homemade is best.
My mother, bless her sweet heart, was not the best cook in the world. She was single with four kids in the 60s and did the best she could with store bought helps: Pepperridge Farm Stuffing Mix. That was all I knew until a church potluck when I ate the real thing. Heaven exploded in my mouth. I was converted.
Sending you my best today as always, and best wishes for the upcoming contest. In the bag for the win,
