I am all for hugs and affection. My mother wants said to me I was like a mother hen while cuddling my two young kids on the couch at her house. I was offended as I loved my kids, still do, and what better way of showing it. You made good use of language in the narrative and it read really well with a strong message. Faye

Comment from adewpearl
my Mum and Dad were affectionate - my mum and dad
I have always felt horrible for children raised in that kind of environment, which is not at all the environment I was raised in
Maybe it is a cultural thing because there are definitely families that hugged and told each other they loved each other back in the day
Dads, don't forget to be affectionate - add comma for direct address
wise advice in your closing and insightful observations throughout

Hi Sankey,
An interesting and very important topic, the one of affection or lack thereof. Not many people wish to address it, or even mention it. It is a cultural phenomenon, where affection is seen as a sign of weakness, and weakness has a negative connotation.
A few spags:
Wrong use of semi-colon:
";"
--Reason is; I am an affectionate person myself.
>>Reason is, I am an affectionate person myself. <<
--Sad thing is; she had to wait 25 years to get that real affection.
>>Sad thing is, she had to wait 25 years to get that real affection.<<
--Not talking about things that happen between husbands and wives privately.
>>Not a sentence and it does not work as a partial, either.
--Talking about real affection in HUGS and so on, that should be acceptable in public.
>>Ditto, as above.
--"children should be seen and not heard".
>>"children should be seen and not heard." <<
Period always goes inside quotation marks.
--You should have seen the resistance to the affection by the lady's VERY OWN GRANDDAUGHTER!
>>Caps should be italics without caps.
--"kiss Hullo",
>>"kiss Hullo," <<
--affection or behaviour
>>affection or behavior<<
--subject...being allowed to cry.
>>subject ... being allowed to cry.<<
--As I close out here, DADS DON'T FORGET TO BE AFFECTIONATE WITH YOUR SONS!
>>Caps are overkill. If you want to stress it, use italics. All caps sometimes means shouting.
--at home...and I mean boys and girls, Dads ok....they will go looking some place else..Maybe to their peril..in a wrong place.
>.at home ... and I mean boys and girls, Dads OK ... they will go looking some place else ... Maybe to their peril ... in a wrong place.<<
Wrong spacing (lack of periods in some) of these ellipses. Also, OK always in caps.
A nice piece, Sankey, where the opinion that affection is important and something should be done about it holds the piece together because it's strong enough to drive it.

I think it is wonderful!!!!! I am a hugger, but I bet you already knew that. LOL I am sure that hugs cure all evils. If the UN or NATO hugged more maybe there would be world peace.

Sankey... I come from an italian family and a dad kissing his son or an uncle kissing a nephew was traditional. Unfortunately, it did not transcend to my to boys. They are adults now and when we see each other a firm handshake and hug suffices. I'll take it!!
Nicely composed... John

AMEn John firm handshake is good. Know all about the Italian affection thing not Italian but need around em enough to know. The area I grew up in had a lot of Italian influence I think they put our town on the map actually. I teach the young boys at church to do good handshakes trouble is they get to be teens and stronger and I have Arthritis, so have to get them to ease back in their teens on my hand ha! Thanks again great review!

This is very engaging and well written. Your opening with the comments about the affection your parents showed draws the reader in at the beginning. Good advice to dads to show affection to their sons. Some families are so different about public displays of affection. My mother's side of the family was very affection. My father's side of the family was less so. Guess which side I remember more fondly? judi

A very thoughtful and philosophical non-fiction essay.
I enjoyed your subject choice and the dedication and clarity with
Which you wrote it.
I have often mulled over many of these points myself and it is interesting
to read similar thoughts eloquently expressed here.
Parents are, indeed, the primary teachers and nurturers of their children
And so may lessons in life, love and relationships are learnt in the home or family circle.
Give a hug, and express your love to those you hold dear, at every opportunity.
Very well written.

Comment from Antoine Charlemaine
Hi Sankey. I say 'Amen' to all you have penned her. Nothing can be more important than to show affection to our children. Yes, I think the resistance to public exhibitions of affection definitely belonged to a bygone era. Sadly, it still persists with some people and parents who have trouble showing affection will transmit that to their own children, and so the cycle is perpetuated.
One thing I think may be an error: 'You should have seen the resistance to the affection by the lady's VERY OWN GRANDDAUGHTER!' If your niece was pursuing the affection, surely it was the grandmother who resisted the offer?
Thanks for posting this very positive and affirming read, Sankey.
Anthony.

Thanks mate. Maybe I need a comma or a Semi-colon in there somewhere thanks for the help. I was wondering myself thanks!
-
DO me a favour and have a look at this again when you have time and see what you think of the change I made, in consideration of your suggestion. Thanks again.

"Energy In Hugs" That just shows that there are so many different types of people around us that you could virtually expect anything to happen. Well done.
