Wow, this is a very beautiful poem. It touches my heart. I love the fourth stanza:
"Cruel Eros made it hard for me
To sing my soul's eternal tune
He set my heart adrift at sea
My lyric voice beseeched the moon"

The background color compliments the image you chose. Great write. Blessings :)

An excellent theme, although I don't like the exclamation point in line 2. I don't see the reason for it. Word choices indicate that the seeker went mad:
my heart adrift at sea
notes of tidal lunacy

Many thanks, Spitfire. I appreciate you taking the time to review, your comments and your generous stars. I have no idea how that exclamation mark crept in. It wasn't meant to be there and I have removed it. Thank you!

Again, it seems you've mastered this difficult form of poetry, Tony. A beautifully written haunting piece. Captures the tragedy of Sappho's unrequited love, which, in the typical style of our wonderful (and largely misunderstood) ancient myths, you have personified (Eros). Six stars for successfully rising to the challenge.

Many thanks, Paulah. I appreciate you taking the time to review, your very kind comments and your generous six-star rating! I suspect Sappho would be saddened to be remembered more for her sexuality than her poetry. History can sometimes be cruel. I imagine that she was a highly educated woman and a wonderful friend at any level.

I'm sure. I'm not familiar with her work, but I think that if man could overcome his arrogance in this tech-savvy world, he might see that he could learn a lot about life from the ancients.

Thank you Tony for sharing this wonderful piece of work with fans, myself and other readers/writers. Your use of double rhymes and this rhyming quatrain were done so well that neither of the rhymes were forced, labored or strained. Your rhyming was very good and made it easy for me to read and understand your poem easily. For a while there arrows had them leading in the wrong direction for the Isle of Lesbos. What it is that mythology of the years of gods and written geniuses who wrote about them. You have a good one Tony and God bless.

With notes of tidal lunacy
I set out on a lonely trip
Will Sappho ever join with me
Aboard my silent silver ship

Professor, what an amazing picture, the more beautiful is the beauty described in that unforgettable poem. You are unbelievable sir, do believe, you are a poet to be honored. Bless you Terry

you have done a really fabulous job with this pantoum.
Basing this poem on history gave it a certain richness in content. I hardly even noticed the repeating lines, only after carefully reading it a couple of times did I see the way they were so cleverly used.

This is in itself a very fascinating story.
The pantoum has allowed you the power to
recite a story of high caliber by way of
the use of repeating lines. The rhythm and
rhyme are like lyrics of a song. Sad that
her beautiful work was lost. A commendable
quest on your part.

That is a great poem, but I have read it before. I saw the challenge in Yeltel's reviews. At the time I remember thinking, my god! did he just come straight back with that, or was there some kind of time span? Very clever . AJ.

I think you approach your quest in all the beauty of this poem of yours. Certainly in this phantom, is an odyssey in itself. I wish I had a sixth star
