Brava, Ingrid, this is a well-thought out and well presented piece. I confess that I am less aquianted with Canada than I should be. I have some spent at least some time in five of your ten Provinces---four of them toward the east. PEI is a favorite vacation spot for me. The red clay cliffs of the southern coast make me think of Ireland.
I have seen the tide come in at the Bay of Fundy.
One of my areas of historical expertise regards the era we cal the French and Indian Wars. I have a good working knowledge of the all the tribes that straddled what are now are national borders.
Because I am a huge baseball fan, I know all the words to O Canada. And I love Canadian bacon, and Moosehead beer.
Ingrid, I'm not much for fighting, but I would fight just as staunchly for Canadian soil as any other.
You are my brothers and my sisters. Borders be damned.

Thank you for the lesson.

Peace, Lee

I know that... really I do. I wasn't trying to teach a lesson, but rather to enlighten the bigotted.

I'm imploding, not sure my writing has worth right now and you can't talk me out of it.

be safe, demon genious. I'll get back to you soon.

I got lost with my eldest son once while driving through Canada, and ended up in a tiny French village in the middle of night, nearly on empty. Thanked goodness we got into British Columbia, where I met this man walking down a road at one in the morning. I expected him to blurt out in French a swear word or two as I rolled down my window. Instead he greeted me in English, and even got his gas can from his garage. And he didn't know us. We were rank strangers no more.

Yet, over the years through my travels into the US, I am astounded by American's lack of knowledge about their northern neighbour./Use an American's or America's----we receive three main stream/Use mainstream instead of main stream.----Canadians are interested in what America has on their mind./Use its instead of their.----You have written a great primer on my neighbour (see) country. A great one as I traveled through it extensively with my Canadian wife from Hamilton years ago.--Well done.

Next time you come to Hamilton, look to the north and understand that I am but a heartbeat away.

Very interesting and well written documentary, Ingrid. It flows well and makes good sense. You have included the necessary information, without blinding everyone with too much detail. Just a few things that may need consideration:

succeed - do you mean secede?

a horizon - an horizon

reduce to two seats in Parliament - reduced

Bien fait!

This is great Spiritual Echo! I just laughed about the wasted ink on the extra letter just imagining Queen Elizabeth saying "it must have a u!" White gravy is also beyond me too. We eat with our eyes and white just ain't natural any more than beaver tails are--that proud and noble Canadian animal. It's Nunavut and House of Legislature.

I really enjoyed your essay. I laughed out loud being a hoser from the Great White North myself. Best of luck in the contest.

Take off eh

But it's such a definable part of our culture. Bob and Doug McKenzie. Greatest of luck!

Good luck in the contest. You are quite correct that Americans in general, know very little about Canada. I spent about 5-6 summers in Canada traveling from B.C. to P.E.I. and I really enjoyed it. Tim Horton's, the 401, Torpnto. Montreal, Winnipeg, Vancouver-I liked it from east to west. I still have some loonies that I kept. I'm ashamed that more Americans don't know the real Canada and the citizenry-there first real taste was the Vancouver

Olympics. Hopefully, this piece will fill in some of the spaces.

I hope you always felt welcomed...I'm convinced you did. Yet, individually the citizens of both our nations can be gracious and nasty.

As you travel across America, I ope that you will notice the landscape is not so different and there is both kindness and pestulant people, but I'm on record; we're not that different.

Writer, this is the first time I see a history lesson submitted for non-fiction writing. Since I am but one generation removed from French-Canadian blood/stories/history, this was very interesting. There were, however, slaves brought to Canada, not only individuals fleeing for freedom. Canada did, however, outlaw slavery nearly a hundred years before the USA, if my memory serves me correctly.
Thanks for this primer. Good to be reminded how close we are and are similar as well.

You are absolutely right about slaves in Canada. While I am no guru in history, I believe the slave issue in this country dissolved through shame, not civil war. need to do a rebuttal to anyone I If I'd have to research. But, we had our own wars with the natives, the French and over the centuries we enslaved the Japanese to build our railroad. We were not without sin. But even our transgressins were buried in history as inconsequential.

Thanks for reading and a very real response.

This is an excellent piece. I've only got to go a little ways into Canada but I sure didn't know It was there because it was different than the US. We're not good about getting the facts of our history taught much less another country. Everyone's got on this kick that they don't want to write anything to offend anyone so they're actually rewriting history books to tone things done. We made mistakes, we need to learn from those mistakes and move on, If e=we cover those mistakes from the upcoming generations they are likely to make them again. This was very informative..Should be a piece that is handed out to all our school children. God bless you.

janie, first of all thanks for the bouquet of stars and now let me continue. The arrogance of countries that think their border, their military might, their economic power is slowly disolving.

Canada is completelt dependent on the US for thei military power. Our population is equivalent to the state of Califonia and just imagine if the US needed to depend on Hollywood to protect it's citizens. It can't. Nor can Canada if there is a military action againts North America. The Us, on the other hand is dependant on its neighbour for water and for that matter a lot of it's oil.

We are co-dependant economically, but we have never been united as friends. At best we are tolerated, yet the average person knows nothing about Canada. They launch their patriotism as some kind of shield. The world s a very big place. Currently the majority of debt owed by the US is to China. They can make America fold with global support. It's all complicated, but we should all try to open our minds. May God bless you too. ingrid

No one, person or country con survive on the;r own. I love America but I love other countries too. America is home but there's so many wonderful people all over this globe. God has been gracious and let me go on a mission trip to Germany, Holland, Italy, Israel and Jordan..they're all just people with feelings and hearts that love and hurt..we are all one human race and God created us all. God bless.

I feel that you have some partial truth's in your story/ documenter. As you are an acceptation in one that knows of the USA we also have some that are knowledgeable as to our brothers to the north. We as Americans have had our heads up our own butts for some time and have been kissing it all that time. I fear for all of us as the economy may well have us as suburbs to China.

I'm not sure why you would call my digest a
    "partial truth."

I am not an exception in understanding or following American politics. I might even consider it a Canadian pastime.

There's a paradox in your review/answer. The begining seems to dismiss my essay while the end seems to acknowledge the fears and very real possibility of economic dominance in Asia. if you know enough about the economic fraility of the current possition of the US you probably realize that China is the biggest creditor of the US currently. It would not be in anyone's interest in putting any nation unto their knees, but there is dominance, military economic and tyranical. Things are changing radically and some peopl do indeed have their nose up their butt. Not sure what your point was, but thanks for reading.
