This sounds about right for curious kids with not a lot of common sense and, apparently, no knowledge of the power of cherry bombs (bombs should have given them a clue). Very good job writing this as it certainly kept a reader's attention. My father loved blowing up things. He managed to burn several holes in my date's shirt, but Ric married me anyway.

Celebrating the fourth with a fifth starting on the third pretty much sums up this great American holiday for some.

Cherry bombs in the hands of a liberal arts major - uh-oh!

The agent laughed. I bet!

This was a very entertaining read:-)

I love your writing, Terry! The way you string your words together in a humor piece always provides hilarity--even in the most benign sentences! I can't imagine what these two were thinking. You would think even a toddler would know better!

I love your story, even though it shows how young people can be so smart and so (can I use the word stupid) at the same time. Thanks for putting in the line that John used in his valedictorian address: '"The future is now in our hands. OUR CLASS WILL NOT BLOW IT!"'. If only, he could have seen the near future.

If always assumed that genius didn't usually possess a lot of common sense. Even I would have expected two cherry bombs to blow up a toilet. I would voted for the noise rather that way to conceal it. I'm glad I no longer have teenagers. Cool story!

Now that I know these two made it out without serious injury to themselves or others I can laugh. Why is it, I wonder, that "trouble" often travels in pairs? I'd lay odds that one or the other of them would not have undertaken such an experiment without the extra "super-power" of two raging testosterone laded adolescents with time on their hands!

It was not a lack of IQ, here! Both went on to become very successful! (Okay, not in science, but....)

Not to mention, both managed to not lose life or limb as a nasty reminder of a prank gone very wrong!

I confess while I've heard of Cherry Bombs, the very name intimated to me that these were small, rather ineffective devices.

What Eric and John did not have back in 1981 is countless YouTube videos showing a myriad of like-minded teens blowing up toilets, copiers, barrels, and a few (I chose to skip) showing some pretty major injuries.

I'm not altogether sure it that's a good thing or a bad thing. Social Media is a major "influencer" today ~ it seems likely as many would view what I just viewed and think "Let's try it!"

This is one of those after-the-fact funny stories that serve to remind us not to go with our first instinct when looking to tempt fate!

Geez. The most dangerous I ever did was use a magnifying glass and the sun to set fire to some dried leaves. Lucky for me my dad was nearby, with a hose--and both the fire and me were "all wet" within seconds!

Lesson learned! We're all very fortunate you decided to stay with us, Terry. I've been laughing at your stories ever since!

Karenina

Excellent story. Very well written.
Two cherry bombs would equal about a quarter stick of dynamite.
I hope they learned how to shut off water, anyway.
Best wishes.

This is funny but could have had serious consequences. It is certainly a well told tele of poor judgment of inexperienced youth. It is quite well written and an interesting read. EVI

I liked your opening as well for its sound, now tell me, which of the two would be you for it sounded as if you were a culprit or a witness. How true would my surmise be?

Tom, Thanks for reading. First I was the opposite of the honor roll. I was 17 years older than these guys. I heard the story from Eric's mother. Terry.Jan,

and once again, I find us to be twins, if I understand correctly in your statement opposite of them. I barely graduated with a passing grade.

Well, it's funny, and not funny, Terry. It's funny imagining
the thought process you explained well. What were they
thinking? Oh, I forgot. They weren't. As stated in your story--
teenagers. It's funny imagining the toilet blowing up. It
isn't funny thinking they could have gotten hurt, set a major
fire, or anything else. Looking back it probably is funny
to most involved. However, you are right about fireworks.
They are dangerous. Your art choice is perfect. I enjoyed
reading about Eric and John's lives post toilet explosion.
Thanks for sharing, Jan
