You did a good job, Mystery Author, expressing your thoughts/feelings about the good ole days in verse. I enjoyed the rhyme and the many examples you shared. I could picture all as I read. Thanks for sharing and best wishes. Respectfully, Jan

Oh those good old days! We all had them and conveniently forget the bad ones. But, I do think times were better then, we stuck together, we had time for our family, not now. Those mortgages, and rents and all the other necessary bills are way too high for parents of today to relax. I enjoyed reading your poem as I recalled my own 'good old days'. Good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

Sandra, they were certainly ,mixed, but who is to say the were bad. They just were, the past is past, the future yet to be revealed and the here and now...well is is okay!
-
That is very true. I still wish I was back there but knowing what I know now. :)) But I'm not going to be around for much of the future that is to come. xxx
-
Sandra, I will be 70 in March, so God willing I hope to spend the last years just slow and easy. Doing what I love the most, writing reflectively!
-
I'm a little older than you, and writing is something I also hope to be able to continue right up until the end of my mortal life. Let's keep the faith!!! :)) xx

Your poem brought back some memories of my own. I remember graduating from nurses training and my first nursing job I made $3.50 an hour! Yeh, those were the days, my friend, we thought they'd never end!
Not so sure if we are better! these days or ncThanks for sharing your skit

Love this! Your story sounds like so many of us, I'm sure! College, jobs and taking care of a family! But so many memories to cherish along the way within those events. Glad to have those, but glad too that some of those jobs and events are past :) xoxo

Yes indeed! The memories are precious.

Interesting musings on retirement and looking back. I'm only in the first few stanzas of my life, but it is clear that there are never any true "good old days." There are always happy memories, but we often selectively remember to avoid those hard times.
Best,
~W

True, the past is past, the future yet to be revealed and the present moment is awesome!

Hello Mystery Writer. This is a great reflection on the "Good old days." I too went through many of those same situations you described in your poem. I was caught in an M&A and escaped. I just liked the realism and recounting of a life and the changes you saw. Great job. Good luck in the contest. Robert

That race is a lot harder for our children these days unfortunately. But I do remember drawing up plans with my wife when we first got together... Fun and travel first then settle and save and then a home and kids. I loved every minute of it. The fun and travel went on for 5 years( yea, we got to see a lot) the settle and save 7 years( saved enough to buy half of our first home outright: )) Kids... My wife was very fertile so got pregnant first time of trying so she gave us two girls in quick succession.
I enjoyed reading your poem friend, it sent me down memory lane. Good Luck!

Sandra, I hope the same bears well for my grandchildren. Things seem so different know, in the day we knew if we worked hard, saved and stayed mostly debt free we could make a nice life.
Comment from Therese Caron
This is a great poem! All those years of going to college, working, raising a family, wondering how secure your job is. And now, after working, living, and saving, free to write and muse on the past! The image you chose is also perfect for this poem. Good rhyming and word flow!

You make a point here. I remember the '90s when the interest rate was 15%. Good for savings, bad for loans. But way back when was even worse with scrub boards and wringer washers, for women to deal with, and no vacuum cleaners. Beating rugs on the line in the backyard... oh no they were not the good old days. Your narrative is spot on and could be a winner.
