Thinks for sharing a little bit more about Dum de, dum mo. I still write and try to decide the hard and soft syllables of every word I write throughout every sentence. Then try to measure the feet, and so on. Well, for the last two weeks any, as I'm trying to understand the basis makeups of poetry forms and styles. I never would have believed I could ever get interested in learning these things, but if I have to read it every day, then I might as well know what I'm reading. Thanks for sharing another fine post. :-)

It's mainly the sound of it, so just reading it out loud or having someone read it to you is the best bet. It all comes together after a while. It took me forever then one day I got it. You'd be surprised at some of the exceptional people here who started out without a clue. :)) mike

I have learned so much here. I was pleased to see someone help instead of just spewing on paper the confusing do's and don'ts of poetry. I have bookmarked it and I am truly a fan. TY Michaelcahill

Wow. I'm so delighted with your response. Yeah, that terminology can be daunting for sure. I remember thinking like, "What in the world are they talking about?" HAHAHA! I'm thrilled this is a help. That makes my day. Nice to meet you. mike

Well I`ll be damned! I do understand this. What the hell? The reggae beat sealed it I think. Still not sure what`s up with the waltz, I guess that is for part two. I just might try this. Well ... might. You know that is a huge step. Pretty damn good. NG

I always call upon the spiritual guidance of Marley for advice in these situations. I'll ... well, you might do it, so I don't want to get myself in trouble. :))
What an awesome review. You've got me all inspired and things like that. mikey

I hate to say it but you finally cleared things up for me.
At 66 I used to write what I wanted till the poet nazies got hold of me and I was scoffed into learning.
Now I write better, I guess. Now lets get back to sacrifice and naked...I want to hear more. Just remember you are teaching me.lol

Yep, you write better. HA! You write awesome now. We both got way better. I've always been a self sacrificing type a guy, so nudity for the sake of learning just seems like a reasonable price to pay, yes? HAHAHA! You're such a good student. :)))) mike

LOL I am still smiling. This reminds me of me. I get reviews and have no idea what they are talking about. What saves me, I think, is I have a good sense of "the beat". That is what makes poem flow as you so well describe. I think this will be helpful piece to many on this site

I remember the first time someone said, "nice enjambment". I thought, "that's great, what the hell is that?" Ha!
Glad you think this is helpful. You're right I believe, the beat is the thing. If it sounds good and has a rhythm, then it's all good. Thanks, mike

Hi Mikey
thank you so much for this post. Now it all starts to make sense; thank goodness for that; I was beginning to think I was much more thick than I thought I was. I am going to copy this down and pin it to my board above my computer so I don't forget it. This was a great help.
Brenda
P.S I wish I had held back one of my sixes.

Oh Geez, do I remember that feeling. Ha! I swear it was months before I knew what anyone was even talking about let alone learning it. I'm thrilled this helps. I know the terminology is what got me and gets most people. So I tried to relate it to something we can all dig. Thanks a million, just mentioning a six is all I need. Big smiles. mike

I enjoyed your informative piece. I have never understood meter, although I love to write poetry! And all of those names you mentioned....forget it! HHhahhahahaha. It did make sense, though, the way you wrote it! Thanks!

Awesome! I always felt like a moron for the longest time with all of those terms. :))
So glad this helps, it really isn't anymore than this. It sure sounds fancy though doesn't it? HA!! Thanks so much. mike

This was an interesting and informative post and explanation of meter. I must admit that I can find it in some forms, but when it comes to sonnets I still struggle
Will keep this in mind when reviewing one soon

The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain.
That's a perfect sonnet line. Fourteen of those with the same beat telling a little story in the right way is a sonnet. There's a lot of complicated terms that can be used to say the same thing, but basically that's all it is. I'm glad this was of benefit. Remeber, if it sounds good, it is good. :)) Thanks much. mike
