That was a very detailed buildup. I can't believe you're actually at her door. After all this time, seven chapters later, you're finally here.
This chapter was a bit of a tease. I thought you would at least see her in this chapter. The drive up was interesting. Why was it so detailed? Was there some special significance or just explaining your state of mind?
Good setup chapter.

Hi Michael, You are so perceptive. You are right on both counts. This drive had a very special significance to me. Since I was a very young person I had virtually passed my mother's doorstep many times without my knowledge. And what it meant to me now, was to collect my thoughts and it certainly reflected my state of mind. From the moment I learned that she was alive and where she lived I knew I was going to make that drive. I hope it makes sense. Thanks a lot for your great review. All best, Ulla

This is really very well written. You build the tension so well that you had me a nervous wreck by the time you knocked on the door. I anxiously look forward to the next chapter and can only hop it all works out well. What a terrible disappointment if she tells you to go away.

I sensed the uncertainty and distress of the main character. The subject is realistic. The artwork is relevant.
I made the assumption that Ulla would be new to California and was surprised by the sentence ".. I thought how I'd always loved this drive .." Of course it could be that she loved this type of drive - as in driving along a beachfront highway. The word 'passed' needs to be 'past". Some sections seemed a little wordy. I've never heard the term 'village' used for locales in Missouri. I'm not sure if the omen was good or bad. A condor's wingspan is nearly 10ft and that is spectacular - so is the omen good? But a condor is also a scavenger and eats huge amounts of carrion - so is the omen bad? Either way the omen could very effective, but for me I'd need more information to know if it is a pleasant one. This piece speaks to a very important issue in Ulla's life and in many other lives. There are many people wrestling with abandonment and struggling with issues related to reconnecting. They deserve to be heard.
This is a good start and should be pursued.

Thank you I appreciate your comments. Of course you can't know that I have known California and most of the USA since I was very young. I indeed know Highway One very well. Passed is very correct in British English as well as past in this context. Thanks again for your review. Ulla

Sometimes tears are like that, I wrote a poem about my dog that mum had taken un announced tho dog pound when I was young, I was sad, but can never remember crying, but as I wrote the poem, I just spontaneously started crying, repressed emotions brought tears I guess, they weren't cried before. Well done with this one, one character, but well described, good projected imagery, empathetic connection with the character, well done, enjoyable, blessings, Roy

Sometimes tears are like that, I wrote a poem about my dog that mum had taken un announced tho dog pound when I was young, I was sad, but can never remember crying, but as I wrote the poem, I just spontaneously started crying, repressed emotions brought tears I guess, they weren't cried before.
