Hi Jay, I liked this post telling the story of two young reckless optimistic youths going out in the world trying to conquer it without a cent to their name. Lovely. With regards to 'the Mongolian idiot' I have never heard that expression, but then again I'm from Europe. But one thing, we all had in common back then, was that we were very ignorant, at best. That has thankfully changed. I am looking forward to your further adventures. All best. Ulla

THanks, Ulla. No, I believe it wasn't known in Europe. It was well known in the US. I appreciate your following this. Hope you stay tuned.

I had to laugh at the phrase, 'I'm not kidding.' I used it when telling my children to do a chore that they had been told to do and didn't. "Pick up your room, right now, and I'm not kidding."
The Mongoloid had probably heard it a thousand times.

Your diet sounded sickening. The eggs--Yuck!

Great article.

-I didn't know she was a Mongolian Idiot(,) and I'd started laughing

Mongoloid, caucasoid, afriloid and australoid -- the classifications of human genotypes. Guess which one we are? You really have to wonder who came up with the nomenclature. My guess is some well-meaning, white university professor with too many lab rats on his hands. Ha. Had to get my digs in.

Okay, Jay I gotta tell ya, I'm encouraged to read the Twain quote at the end I was young and foolish then; now I am old foolisher. Because if it weren't for that I wouldn't even know what this post was about. I do remember the egg sandwiches and thought that might not be such a good idea.

We sure were ignorant, insensitive jerks back then eh? But, as a writer you have to tell the unvarnished, unsanitised truth, or else what's the point?

Interesting post, my friend.

Gloria

Thanks my dear Gloria. Everyone's looking for a big message in this. LOL, ain't no such animal. Just a couple of young farts out on our own trying to find our way through daily life.

You missed my "The Trining" post while it was worth more than 2 cents. But you don't like Fantasy any way, do you?

While Mongolian idiot was a term used in its day, I think the first two times you used the term was acceptable, but there are four such references in close proximately, and it almost feels as if you are rubbing the readers discomfort in their face.

I know this is a reprint, but I also don't see this chapter as explaining her story, just your encounter. Of course the writing is excellent, but I would have been far more entertained by hearing about how you survived the poverty or even what you found for breakfast. Now, if you'd gone dumpster diving, a lesson the girl taught you about survival skills, that would have been a more satisfying resolution to this chapter. Maybe next time.

Thank you, Ingrid for your forthrightness. I wasn't trying to make a point of it. The post wasn't intended to show her story. It was to explore two young men's experience being on their own. There will be more stories, more adventures, and more foolishness. I had an unlimited supply of foolishness. I hope none of it will be hurtful to others. Again, thank you, Ingrid.

Many and orphan/homeless adult dined from The Garbage Can Cafe. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very interesting read. There is good imagery.

Hello Jay I must say you and your side kick had unusual time learning the ropes of life from the things you went through together

Now I know a Down Syndrome person
can be called a Mongolian Idiot.

You certainly know how to make your blogs from your past very interesting,,
Gert

No, don't call a Down Syndrome person a Mongolian Idiot. That was from the 60's. Thanks for reading, Gert.

Reading Mongolian Idiot brought back a not so fond memory of my cousin calling us a few years back to inform us our cousin (her sister) just gave birth to a Mongolian Idiot. Apparently being politically correct hadn't reached Vancouver B.C. yet...probably still hasn't. Good to know the boys are settling in and their check arrived in time. Great story. Funny how old memories jump out and give us something to write about.

Thanks, Valerie. Sometimes the memories flow and then stop right in the middle. I wish I had a timeline for the major parts of my life.

Mine pop up in the middle of the night when I don't have a pen or paper to write them down.

This is yet another interesting addition to the story and a great bit of history behind the writing. This was a very interesting story indeed. Writing opens up some interesting doors.

That was quite an encounter and you have an interesting way of sharing it with us. You article does leave a few questions though, but maybe the answers came later. How did you manage to move on from that point of being desperately broke and what happened to the girl?

Thank you so much, Serendipity! I'll go on with the story (as soon as I write it). Don't know what happened to the girl, unfortunately.

Great descriptive story as it provides strong imagery throughout. It also reminded me of labels that have changed over the years...thank goodness. I was drawn to your ayeeeeeee's because that is the sound the Tabasco slot machine makes when I hit the jackpot. 8-)

Hey, Karen! Thanks for reading. It is amazing about labels. So many people hurt through ignorance.
