I wish there were dolphins in Lake Michigan- I would be there in a flash. You are so right, too much introspection- something I freely admit I succumb too- is not a desired state of being, sometimes a flashlight in a featurelesd cave. Your transition to Neptune is very good. I never knew Neptune had a wife. Joseph Campbell showed the power of myth as teacher and so do you. Excellent and have my last six.

Thanks, Ed., for the six-star review. Much appreciated as always. I think it was you who introduced me to the writings of Joseph Campbell a year or so ago. I have much enjoyed his writing and his philosophy on life.

A beautifully written and conceived subject choice Tony, you really draw a lot of interest from a lot of obscure and interesting sources, you could never be called boring! Another superbly penned and utilised work, that adapts great imagery and projects it beautifully into a literary, creative world that enthrals and delights, deserves a six which I don't have, well done, blessings, Roy.

Thank you for a beautifully-written poem, Tony. The feeling you've created in your first stanza is accomplished through well chosen words -- leading us into that feeling of introspection:

"looking in, instead of looking out,
for I am drawn in the depths of my being
and like to drown in them."

I like the positive spin in the end -- the better choice:

"We could just as easily disport with dolphins." (lovely imagery)

Great alliteration there and with drawn/depths/drown; and crystal caves.

Thanks for sharing! Alana

Thanks, Alana. Too much introspection can be a dangerous thing, I think.

What an interesting poem, which was made even more interesting by your Author's notes. Thanks for the lesson on Neptune/Poseidon's wife - before today, I did not know he had one. I loved the story about the dolphins as well. I wish modern man would give them the respect that Neptune did.
I'm not sure that I understood your disparity in this Free Verse poem, or how it linked to Salacica, but I enjoyed the read.
Rose.

Thanks, J2W. It would be good if we took more care of our Dolphins; both the real ones and the metaphorical.

Did you ever see the documentary 'The Cove'?
It's a documentary on Japanese slaughter-fests of Dolphins - and how they 'save' some to sell to 'Swim with the Dolphins' tourist traps around the world.
    It made my skin crawl.

No, I didn't see that. However, judging by their record on whaling, it is easy to imagine that they might do this. It can be hard to come to terms with their cultural views on marine life at times.

If you get a chance, do watch the documentary. I don't know how your TV's work there, but this is available here on Video On Demand. The dolphin, like the whale are still being hunted by Japanese Whalers, but the sad thing is that many Japanese no longer eat this type of meat. The government subsidises this industry and actually pays the whalers to bring in the catch, but there are warehouses full of the stuff, with not many buyers. The Japanese gov't claims that the whales and dolphins they do catch (about 2K between them and Norway/Iceland) are being taken for 'research' purposes. Horsefeathers.

I wished when I was young to see The Cross and The Hoss
and all those southern stars...oh, well, web pics will do.
Good info and fine poem.

Thanks for your review, LIJR. Sometimes the skies are a bit clearer down here, but the Northern stars on a frosty night take some beating, too.

I agree, it is a choice to come out of darkness. It is easier not to look out, but if you do, you just might find happiness. Or in this case, dolphins! :) Nice flow and creative approach. Thanks for posting.

For I am drawn to the depths of my being is a wonderful line that adds to the feel of the poem. Your words take the reader to another place, one of myth and fantasy where humans and dolphins meet. Excellent poetic form.

Thanks, Mermaids. Smalll amounts of introspection can do the soul good, just so long as you don't overdose on it!
