Thanks for bringing back those memories of fun in the sun and families playing together. We used to do that when the kids were small, but now that they are all grown up they go off and play with their big friends. For the past ten years, my husband has worked on Memorial Day (big day in the car biz)so I am left to my own devices.
Lovely but simple and sad message of the real reason we "celebrate" the day. There are far too many we have lost.

bless you for your lovely sixer on this one jj! Memorial Days always make me sad I'm afraid. We call it Remembrance Day in Australia and it's actually on Nov 11th - Armistice Day. All the old soldiers give out red poppies with small labels reading "lest we forget" on them. And how we DO forget. Even sadder these days, I think, as our mistrust of our own government deepens and we wonder if all these deaths are in vain, or if we're all merely pawns in a power game of greed. And yes, only in America, right, Memorial Day Sale! We are a funny bunch, aren't we?
Blessings - and have a lovely day.

Ooh very very nice piece! What does the red ball signify if anything? Innocence, fun, carefree? Or the color, a symbol of the blood fallen. "Lying". Is that the lying that our government tells us? "We are fighting for a just reason and these young people are dying for a noble cause", etc.? Hmm, that was my take at least. GREAT piece, short, great structure, great flow, great message. Love it.

red ball ... hmmm ... colors of life, 'lightness' of being, red against the blue sky, and red for blood ... you've got it Greg! "Lying", more subtle ... yes, they're lying in their graves, never to see the sun etc ... but the very fact that we think first of Memorial Day as a holiday and THEN think of what we're meant to be remembering is rather telling, yes? And as for "Memorial Day Sales" - well ... don't get me started!

Wow, very deep yes indeed. Wow. I'm going to read it again now.

I know that's right! Love your analogy, and your usage of the red ball. I agree with you. War is such a killer. So many lost lives in graves. So many families lost their love ones. My father was a soldier, and he died after the war, or during wartime. I never will forget that cannon salute, and the folding of the flag. What do you call it?

You have written such a wonderful Memorial Day tribute poem. To too many individuals this is just another day off or three day weekend, and far too many forget that this day was set aside to place flags in memory of our lost heroes.

This poem is powerfully true, my toughs go to all that lost their life, and the widows and orphans left behind whose life forever has changed.
Thank you for sharing your emotion. Pili

Wow, are WE on the same wavelength - you have to see the poem I just posted.
Sharyn, this is so powerful. Once again, your presentation lends impact to words already gut-punching your reader. Bravo. Six stars, if I could - OUTSTANDING free verse. Imagery is heartbreaking, as is the ambiance contrast.

It took you a little time to come to the meaning of the day. But I can see why as you come back to the start at the end. A very nice free verse and an excellent entry for this prompt. Best wishes.

That's the general idea of the piece Ine - we think FIRST of going to the beach, and THEN we think of what the day is supposed to be about - maybe. How times change, hmm?

Yes, they do nowadays, Ine

Definitely a satirical write for memorial day. Those young men sacrifice for the sake of freedom - no longer bouncing a red ball. For the sake of peace and harmony, now they lay in their graves wondering - what went wrong, we do too!
War is never right anyway we look at it!
Great write and best luck to the contest.
Cheerio, hugs, Ritchie.
