I see what you mean. Similar in a way but your imagery is so much better. I love the descriptive wording you used and writing to awaken the senses. Such a good free verse. Wonderful simile with winter draft like frigid tumbleweeds. Love it. Deserving of a 6 star rating but I just gave away my last one. *****+
Blessings,
Maria

This poem brought back sweet memories of our honeymoon in Kauai! I love how you incorporate all five senses; with the feel of the comfy chair, the smell of the grass, seeing flowers and birds, even I can taste the Kona coffee with cream, and then you wake me out my Hawaiian drift with the sound of a rooster. Masterfully done. Thanks for taking me back.

I take my Hawaiian experience to the max; I drink Kona coffee with coconut creamer. The creamer's not real but the effect is. Thanks again. :) -Steve

Such a lovely poem, delineating the natural wonders of this tropical place, not just in general terms but with finely-honed details such as spiked bromeliaads and a quiet violet ocean horizon. Life is so beautiful that, in spite of cold winter drafts flying invisibly through the open door, "I leave my door open." A life-affirming, celebratory poem!

I enjoyed the way you vividly capture the scene of your "paradoxical jungle." I especially admired your "orchid sky...latticed" and your appealing to our sense of smell with the "fresh-mown grass" and sound by the "wings whir". Thanks for adding the palm trees' picture to help transport us to your bit of paradise just outside your "open door". Hugs- Joan

Wow! Like a picture postcard, only with words! The rooster shepherding his harem, the frigid tumbleweeds, and oh the "real cream!" Congrats on the blue ribbon and seal! Great job (again!)

This is a good free style poem that tells a story. It brings to me pictures of island living. It reminds me of Hawaii. I would love to go back there again sometime. Maybe the next time I'll go there in a boat. I remember looking down at the ocean and seeing so many ships. It surprised me that there were so many. Anyway, thank you for taking me back to the islands again even if its a poem.

I have no suggestions for your poem. It's great the way it is.

Oh my! Where to start? So many, many textures, smells and images created with this poem. I could almost feel myself laying in a hammock under the palms. :) Wish I could give it six stars. My favourite line ... "absurd dry loving exotica". And isn't that the nice thing about being in a tropical climate? ... you can leave the door open!

Thanks for sharing this lovely poem!

Sharyn:
I thoroughly enjoyed the deliberate, relaxed pace of your work here. I have been long gone from the site, for various and sundry reasons, but I'm trying to re-introduce myself in this community; it was with great pleasure that I happened upon your poem, a pastoral beauty that fits nicely in with your vast volume of works. Thank you for sharing this slice of your paradise, this slice of your golden heart.
Peace to you and yours,
and Salud!
Wes

Bless you, Wes, and welcome back! I wondered where you'd disappeared to, and have missed you enormously! My personal e mail: dreamers@maui.net - any time! :)I've been writing pretty consistently, though not in huge volumes. (Not worth it unless you can promote it on FS). oops! just noticed you'd ALSO given me a lovely SIX! WOW! what a welcome back whoopee! This one was a special nod to Billy Collins, who I've been reading. I look forward to reading your stuff again!

Your free verse poem about the normal, beautiful, and wonderful island is perfect.
I love the common activity in paradise. I love the ending... leaving the door open.
Very well done.
