Congratulations on being a winner. You have expressed an attitude we all need to evaluate in our lives. This country is and has been in a moral crisis. I think it is unfortunate that we have not responded to many symptoms until it hit our pocketbooks, where are we with issues such as you present, why don't we listen to Rev King...content of the heart...anyway...I liked our piece. Thanks so much. I think the right entry won the story of the month. It seemed to be the best to me. Actually, I was surprised and sooooo pleased to have my post even chosen for the competition. Thanks so much for stopping by, reading and taking the time to comment. There were a lot of good entries. ann

one of a very few writings that's has gotten my attention at times of past and times of current that brings along
a hard course in finding how slow the wheel turns for changing human nature! It's difficult to understan the bible between the lines when it is being read upside down
by closed-minded folks. You did great here Lots of us know
what happens where there's a fork in the road. That invisible sign will be there the right road is found. PIT

ann,
made me smile. made me laugh. i like the remark about louisiana. even today people spout such rhetoric. there are four jews in this small town of 3300 people. two are elderly women. the other two, my five-year-old daughter and me. her school isn't having a halloween party but it is having a christmas and easter party. go figure. during the december holiday they place a large tree in the middle of town for a month or more. it speaks loudly to me. the other day a lady i ran across at the store, her granddaughter is in my daughter's class. we were talking about the fact there are two little black boys in the class. my daughter and i are american indians. i don't recall what she was saying or even about to say as i popped off with my daughter telling me that one of the boys is her boyfriend. i think i surprised her. i tell you, small towns can take you back fifty years. some things don't change. some things do.
keep up the good writing.
good luck~

ann,
i agree. it is funny what people will say. i am still trying to understand why that guy you spoke with believes the way he does. some people are able to move away from such beliefs. i guess he isn't.
thanks for the new year wishes. i appreciate them.
love,

You are so right, this election must be one where we choose somebody we think qualified. As to which canidate that is, that will become an individual decision. Thought the discussion with the gentleman seated next to you enlightening. Unless he was hispanic, didn't he "violate" his belief comingling races? I am always fascinated just how far people will go believing the absurd over facts, even when confronted with the evidence.
No SPAG noted while reading.

Thanks so much for your comments and time in reading. No, the guy is not Hispanic; however, it was as if the rules didn't apply to him -- just everyone else. Sometimes I find such people frightening. I appreciate the generous review. ann

Amen, this was a well written piece of great substance. You example was well taken and the picture added the correct visual. If it were to be published, I might imagine the idea of telling the two stories together might be better served on two different articles.
The granddaughter and the Obama examples can be separate stores. Just an opinion.. and I think you are a marvelous writer, simple and easy to read. ZeeZee

thanks so much for the generous review and helpful comments. I tend to agree with you in that this essay could be made into two articles -particularly if it were to be newspaper or magazine type. Both situations are examples of how completely convinced someone can be that what they believe is right and be unable to see another side without opening their minds. I used the two (actually 3) situations to reinforce the idea that brain blindness can apply to the most trivial to the most serious situations. Again, thanks for the kind review. ann

Hi There Annmuma
I thought you did a very good job of getting this very valuable lesson across, I know I have been guilty of believeing i'm right when I havn't been and I think it is good to have a private code to bring each other back to reality, and I found your story very reinforceing making me keep an open mind about everthing.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and comments. I guess we all suffer from brain scotoma at some times in our lives. It's difficult to approach subjects with an open. Glad you stopped by. ann

Thank you for sharing this. I feel I should comment on your writing, but want to comment on your message. I agree we need more This is not US 89 signs to remind us no matter how convinced we are that we are right we may not be,and we should be open to other people's views and check our own facts.
As I'm writing this I realise how skillfully and subtly you've woven the different elements of the story, to move us from the past to the present, and potentially the future. Your use of dialogue shows the warmth of your relationships with your late husband and granddaughter, and the contrasting views of yourself and your dinner companion - allowing us to make our own judgments.

Great story, thanks for posting. I couldn't find anthing wrong with it at all.
The end reminded me of a quote you might like:
'The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.' ~Winston Churchill

Your narrative and prose are impeccable, and your content, though rather simple, is certainly of value and is excellent advice. Unfortunately, folks have great difficulty arranging their prejudices to match the facts. It is called brain scotoma. Slainte, rhymer1
