I've turned into a coyote reading this, because I'm delighting in my fellow wild beasts finally unleashing their fury on this pond scum. It's harder and harder to like their mom, though, I have to confess. She knew all these secrets and allowed them to percolate with her "child's wishful thinking." Nice "revving up" here toward the denouement. xoxox

The mother is weak, but in those times, there weren't any resources for women. But, I think I would have gone down swinging if he had hurt one of my children. Thank you for your honest feedback. I live you for that. Gretchen

Same. Or if he'd hurt me, either. My ex-husband did that once, and my comment to him later that evening was, "The next time you feel the need to physically hurt me again, I want you to remember two things: The first is that I am a very vengeful person, and the second is that you're a very heavy sleeper." He moved out shortly thereafter...because I'm juuuuuuust that level of unnerving, I guess.
