I do my best not to judge people. If I encounter someone nasty, I first try to write it off as a one time thing. Bad day, in pain, angry at someone else. Second time, I might not be as patient. Third time, "what the heck is your problem? " usually comes spilling from my mouth. Most cases, they will see me as a person. This is with every race. People are people. One is no more important than the next. Great flash piece. Gretchen

Thank you Gretchen. It got handled, not as violently as portrayed, but it ended after just one week.

A good story with great messages. So many of us thought that in the year 2024 we would be far above these problems yet here we are completely engrossed in racism again in America. The racists and bullies have been approved of by certain politicians and have been given the courage to come out of their dark holes and talk loudly again about their hate. Hopefully, after November's vote we will be able to knock those people back where they were before and try to heal things. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you for your wonderful review. We share the mutual hope that we will one day soon be able to move beyond the shallow ravine of racial animus.

Thank you for sharing this with story with us. Nobody is born prejudiced. It is learned. We are all God's children. If one believes in Adam and Eve, we are all related.

Unbeknownst to him, this bias stemmed from his brother Raul's influence. comma after 'brother')

Day after day, Daniel would sit next to Ernest on the bus, (sit beside Ernest)

A good story, well written, with a great message to go along with it. I think we all should look into our family roots. We would all realize that we are related in some way, regardless of the shade of our skin. I am white, and when I was in 12th grade my best friend's mom was tracing their ancestry. My best friend was black. She would come to school and tell me what her mom had found. One day, she mentioned a name that her mother had run across, and it was my grandmother's maiden name. After more research, we found that her great great grandmother had been a slave owned and "kept" by my great great grandfather and he had given their children his name, so it turned out that we were cousins, and we couldn't have been happier to be related. I now have two grandchildren that are mixed, and my grandson has asked about the fact that his cousins are white and whether I love him and his sister differently. We have had the talk about the fact that real love doesn't see color. I pointed out to him that he and his sister look more like me than the cousins, because I have olive skin, black hair, and brown eyes. His cousins are blonde and blue eyed. I don't see any of them any differently. There are good and bad of every race, creed, and nationality. People are people - they are not the color of their skin!!!

One day science will confirm that skin complexion and nose structure are a result of where a people lived for generations than for any other reason. Cold climate, narrow nostrils, minimal exposure to sun and heat, paler complexion, also straight and larger hair volume is a protection against the colder temps. It is not a plot by our creator to separate us, it is a scientific adjustment.

I enjoyed reading this story. Today, there is still so much prejudice and bullying. Your poem is interesting, descriptive and well written. Great job.

This sounds like Raul original grudge had more to do with jealously than with racial prejudice. Maybe Sam didn't get the whole picture or realize he onw physical makeup in included same DNA he chose to dislike. The incident caused some pain of misunderstanding. Racial prejudice makes no sense but it is out there still.

Thank you so much for sharing with us a story that has been lived out far too many times in a country that prides itself on being: "One nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Racism end prejudice are universal problems that have been around since the beginning of time. They have infected every race, but it they have reared their ugly heads most notably in our country concerning black and white. Slavery was absolutely horrendous but the liberation brought little salvation for the black man. Thankfully, today the laws prohibit race discrimination. However, the implementation and enforcement of these laws are a lot more difficult than putting words on paper. It is everyone of our responsibilities to combat hateful speech and bigoted action in all forms. When will we learn there is really only one race: "The human race." When will we learn, the ground is level at the foot of the cross.

FYI, I believe you have two different spellings for Raul & Raoul.

Thank you for the heads up. I agree with your assessment. Sadly laws written on paper do little to affect the laws written in our hearts and minds, where the real damage occurs.

Perfect! Good morning to you and thanks for the wonderful story with an awesome message. My family is bi-racial and I see both sides of the fence and it's sad. People are people and should be seen by what's inside, not the color of their skin. I have three great granddaughters who range from a chocolate brown to a perfect tan.... they all get treated differently by some. that's horrible!

Yes. Even though we receive instruction from our holy writings, telling us that racial hatred is wrong, even some ministers are guilty of promoting racial hatred. Go figure.

Hi Nomi,
This is a good story with a morals. Discrimination is bad and don't judge a book by its cover. Though I would call the prose not a poem.
Keep writing and stay healthy
Enjoy the rest of your week.

Hello Joan, I never intended this to be listed as a poem. I have not posted for awhile and must have mistakenly entered it as a poem. Thank you for your fine review.

You're welcome, Nomi. I've made this mistake too.

So many injustices, so much prejudice. You have written an excellent story with a very important message. Hope people listen. Why can't people see we are all the same inside? Provoking and needling to get a reaction is inexcusable. Ernest is to be admired and respected.
(Just check spelling of Raul/ Raoul.) It does need to be classified as prose, not poetry, also. Well done.

Thanks Wendy. I will correct the spelling issue. I did not intend to enter this as a poem. I am not sure how the mix-up occurred, but I will try to fix it somehow.
reply by Wendy G on 20-Jun-2024
I don?t think it matters too much as it isn?t in a contest but it might affect your rankings for both poetry and prose. I did that once and asked Tom to fix it for me.
