Are we really so different--mothers and daughters?47 total reviews

Oh my but this is interesting! I'm sure the apple falling from the tree is situational.
Sorry for the loss of your mom. You were fortunate to have a good one. I am sure she would be proud of your path and decisions. She's your mom!

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Douglas. I appreciate your feedback. (Sorry for the late reply. I've just now recovered from two back-to-back sicknesses: occupational hazard of being a teacher--and not one I would trade for the world.) Thank you again for reading.

A beautiful story in a poem, reflecting that most precious of relationships, that of mothers and daughters. You can be yourself fully, because your mother believed in you. Not all daughters are so blessed. Well done.

Well said, well written. Mothers play a huge part in our lives and what we become. I liked your honest tale of how your mother taught you, you carry her genes, therefore you are joined eternally. One day you will meet again and laugh about your childhood. K xx

Teachers are exposed to all the little darlings they teach. I taught art but they were adults. I hope you are well now. K xx
-
That is true. I affectionately call my students my "germ factories"--though never to their faces. Yes, I am feeling better, but I'm still congested, which happens here in the cold weather. Hopefully it passes soon. Art with adults sounds like fun.

I used to do workshops for adults, mainly pastels. The money was good on weekends. K xx

You have written a very stirring poem that really grabs your reader and pulls them in to the dilemma we face... will we end up being our mothers... will that expectation from others or ourselves define us. A very thought provoking verse.

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Melissa. I appreciate your feedback. Yes, it is thought-provoking, and I still laugh whenever I say something, and it's not my words but Mom's. Hi A,
This is a good free verse ode to your mother. It seems you take after a lot. But remain yourself. It is good that you had someone to teach you to write. I like the original metaphor for being buried near the end of the poem..
Keep writing and stay healthy.
Enjoy the rest of the day and week

Thank you for reading and reviewing, Joan. I appreciate your feedback. Yes, it took me a while but I've grown comfortable in my own skin. I know I carry bits of my mom (and dad) inside me, but I am my own person. I just find it funny whenever I say or do something, and I end up channeling one of them. (Sorry for the late reply. I've just now recovered from two back-to-back sicknesses: occupational hazard of being a teacher--and not one I would trade for the world.) Thank you again for reading.

You?re very welcome, A.
Hope you are completely cured. I was continually sick when I fist started working in dav care. I am healthier now that I am out of it.

I'm the same way, Joan. It usually takes about four years for me to acclimate, especially as I've moved to a new state. I'm not as ill as I was last year, but I'm still in the "weak/low" immunity stage. Hopefully, it'll be better next year. Yes, I'm feeling much better; still a little congested, but according to Arkansas natives, that's not atypical here.

My mother and father were polar opposites. I inherited both sides and both sides are constantly at war within me. My mother's hair trigger temper and willingness to fight, my father's mild temper and eagerness to forgive and make peace. As a result, I am often torn apart by the war that often takes place in my head and in my heart. In the end I have benefitted from the positive nature I inherited from the both of them. So I reject the negative parts of my inheritance. The ones I pity the most are my two children.

Thank you for reading and reviewing, nomi338. I appreciate your feedback. I totally understand the warring sides. It can be a hassle but also beneficial; it depends on the case. (Sorry for the late reply. I've just now recovered from two back-to-back sicknesses: occupational hazard of being a teacher--and not one I would trade for the world.) Thank you again for reading.

You know in retrospect, my son is the mild mannered one and my daughter has somewhat of an easily triggered angry response to provocation.
-
Interesting. It's the exact opposite in my family-my brother has the easily triggered angry response, and people say I'm the mild mannered one.

This is a great read about not only you and your mum but also mothers and daughters in general. As I was reading I was thinking of my mum and also of my daughters. A lovely read,
Cheers.

I like your poem about remembering your mother and what you two hand in common and what you didn't have in common. Sometimes you think about what would they say, if they saw and heard what is going on now in the world. You are right, once the pass away, you are the woman of the house or should I say, your leadership.
I like how you centered your poem.
Good luck with your poem.

Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem of a basic truth with us. Yes, we are our mother's daughters. It's funny how we end up doing that even though a younger us said we would never. LOL I enjoyed reading.
