I think you captured that in-between state of between sleep and consciousness well in your well crafted free verse. My favorite part was "Disrupt my daze
and pull me from
the precipice of peril."
Hope this does well in the contest!

This is a splendid piece that describes something many of us experience in such a vivid, accurate, and poetic way as if it were a surreal experience. A very good write.

Well that was a new word for me, although now I know about it I recognise its effects very well. And in the process of researching it I found it used as a clever title for this collection of writing by young New Zealanders:
clerestorypress.co.nz/the-re-draft-series/hypnopompia

I am impressed by the vivid imagery in your poem:
night's cruel capture
nestled in the void
precipice of peril

Nice work.

There are some people who fear sleep as they have nightmares and they are so terrified that sleep means they are anxious. I used to have terrible nightmares as a child and only grew out of them when I left home. Since then, I rarely have a nightmare. A fine post and I felt the emotion here, love Dolly x

This is an extremely well written piece of free verse poetry in which you have used some very good examples of alliteration and imagery. As a sufferer of insomnia, I can relate to this! Very good. Good luck.

Isn't that the wonder of the Dawn, that brings with it renewal of the mind and soul, for the past was yesterday and the past is old and cannot affect this new day. This is a beautifully written poem a great offering in articulate free verse, well done, blessings Roy

I will applaud the covering of a unique topic. I think some of it was a bit abstract and took some riddling out, though I do understand the concept of being in the state of consciousness leading out of sleep. It is not quite lucid dreaming, but it can feel like it. Worse in my opinion is the sleep paralysis. It always felt like someone was sitting on my chest and I would wake in a panic.

If I am understanding it right, each stanza is the narrator asking for some external stimuli that would be enough to pull them out of this in-between state, such as brighter light, or a breeze.

I don't understand the bit about memories though.
The last line sticks out the most and it is a great concluding verse.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts here, Janis. Your interpretation regarding the narrative is correct. The poem's abstract quality was intentional, meant to mirror the blurred lines between sleep and wakefulness. In some cases, hallucinations may occur and vary in intensity. Past events can mix into our semi-conscious state, particularly in cases where psychological disorders, like PTSD, are also present. The 'memories bit' was primarily inspired by my own experience with this, so I completely understand if it didn't quite speak to you. I appreciate you taking the time to review.
