Herky the Turkey

Okay, Jim, I'll have you know that I always insist on reading poetry aloud...and this one SO appealed to the musician in me that it actually had me doing a Jerky Herky dance that resembled the way turkeys walk with that little stutter-step thing. By the third stanza, I was doubled over with raucous laughter, having more fun than I could possibly hope to have this coming Thanksgiving Day.
"Hilarious" does not even scratch that metaphoric barnyard surface! O. M. G. I find this a holiday masterpiece. I am going to bookcase it and enjoy it every single year.
Many thanks for this DELIGHTFUL read!! xoxoxo

Thanks for an awesome review and for the 6 stars, Rachelle. You made my day! I'm so glad you enjoyed it.
That's a great way to read poetry. For the author, it helps you to get the meter just right when you can read it smoothly without extra pauses or rushed syllables to keep it flowing.

EXACTLY, EXACTLY, EXACTLY!! The musician in me reads it aloud because, when it's done properly, it sounds like a song! (Or, in this case, a DANCE!!) I'm still smiling over the joy that evoked last night!! xoxox

The only issue I have with this great rhyming story is on Thanksgiving, I cannot look at my turkey without thinking of Old Herky.
Very clever and fun story.
I enjoyed this - great presentation.
Best wishes,
Mary

Ooo, sorry I may have spoiled your Thanksgiving for you. You'll forget about it again by next year.

This is a cute poem for Thanksgiving. I enjoyed the humor of Herky's intended plot to escape being the meal of the day. Too bad he had those spies. Good rhymes used. Blessings and happy Thanksgiving! Carol

Same to you, Carol. Try not to think about poor Herky when you enjoy your meal this year.

Herky is safe around our house because several of us are allergic to him. LOL.

I loved your humorous poem. And so great that you found that photo to ho with it. I can just picture Herkey trying to hide under his mask. And those darn spies... oh well... bon appetit!
And, from your notes, I couldn't help but chuckle at the thought of all those turkeys huddled together instead of going into the shelter... yes, I think that turkey owner lost her case . Lol
Thanks for sharing this with us snd Happy Turkey Day to you!

I had to combine two photos to come up with that picture, but I thought it came out pretty well. Thanks for your great review, and Happy Turkey Day to you too!

The life of a Turkey is a hazardous occupation to say the least, one is likely to lose their head if they don't use their brains and make themselves scarce on thanksgiving, and it's only Christmas here, beautifully written Jim, excellent poem. Blessings Roy

Thanks, Roy. I guess you Aussies don't really celebrate Thanksgiving, do you? Is there any sort of similar holiday there?
-
Nor does anyone else in the western world, it was instituted by the pilgrim fathers Jim, you know that.

If I hadn't seen the author's name I would have thought it was written by that Bermuda guy who has a knack of writing children stories with every ilk of animal. He is good but oh so repetitive with his moral endings but nay you are rather different
In short I like it

Poor ol' Herky. It seems he worked hard on his plan but was foiled by his barnyard companions. They probably didn't want to be dinner if his plan worked. The notes are interesting. Wild turkeys have to be smart to survive so I wonder if we've bred the smarts out of the domesticated ones as well as the color.

That sounds like a reasonable conclusion, debi. Most of them are white these days.
I guess you can't blame the other farm animals too much for the reason you stated. That's what I think too.

I'm with you feller's. Talking about the not-so-smart turkeys' reminded me of one of my favorite movies
"Oh, Brother Where Art Thou" where you wonder how some of those folks can find their way out of bed unaided. Good poem. Karen

I loved that movie for its quirky humor. I love everything by the Coen brothers for that reason.

I loved your delightful Thanksgiving turkey poem. My favorite lines were about the guests from far away who could savor the incomparable flavor of Old Hurky, who upon the platter lay. Great rhyming and story telling here!

Excellent poem, Jim sparkled with a little thanksgiving humor...
The farmer owned a turkey named Herkey
Who was acting just a little bit quirky,
Then right before his eyes
Came his very last surprise
When everything became a little bit murky...
I tried...
Thanks gif the giggles.

Hey, not bad, John. Glad you liked this one. Maybe I'll write a monorhyme poem using "urkey." You gave me a couple of good words to use there.
