I feel sorry for Don. It had to be heart shattering. I am surprised the Kelly listened to her parents that fast. I would expect that to take more time. I have a feeling she found out something on her own. I am enjoying reading these memiors.

Thank you Barbara. Don was really hurt badly that time. All my children were hurt at times. I never was hurt in that way, maybe because I found my mate young.

What a hard year for all the kids - and you! But they all gained something from the experiences, I guess. I didn't know that Tommy had changed that much and even got into drinking. No wonder Carol knew not to pursue the relationship. And poor Don and his heartbreak! We think college years are meant to be a time of good young adult life but often it can be the most stressful.

Thank you Helen, I think after Carol left the school Tommy sowed some wild oats for a while. I believe he turned out all right over time, but by that time they had grown apart.

Don and I have something in common. I went to meet a gal's parent. Her Dad was a minister. I was 28. She was 18. After we returned, it was finished as fast as it began and I believe it was the age difference. If I was a parent in that position, I would have encouraged ending it as well.

Thanks. Kids don't like to hear what parents have to say but in the end most of the go along when the parents weigh in with their objections. In the great scheme of things ten years isn't so bad. I married one nine years older then me. We still had 61years together.

Having a woman ten years older would have been swell, but reversing the rolls. No chance I'd say ok.

I like the ending of your post, sometimes we must learn a lesson on the hard way, to make it valuable:"At any rate, his heart was broken. Not only did this rejection shatter his male ego, but a class in Auto Mechanics which he thought would be something to help bring up his lagging grade-point average turned out to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back and destroyed what little self-confidence he had left. That chapter of his life deserves its own story. This story is entitled Negotiating the Negative."

Thank you Iza. All of my kids had their hearts broken. Luckily broken hearts mend and we learn from the experience to be a little stronger the next time.

Sounds like if it wasn't for bad luck they would have no luck at all. Is this going to be a continuing story? You write well but might want to flesh out your children more. We don't know them like you do.
All in all good writing. If you have time, take a look at my story "Moving Day"100 words, and tell me what you think. Thanks. Karen

Thank you for the review. I forgot to put that in there about it being part of much longer story. This is twenty-forth chapter. I'll add an out line of whet is going on with characters.

I know what it's like to have one's heart broken, I had it broke twice by the same girl, but the first tome was the hardest, I lost a zest for living, but it teaches you to get in with life, I love reading your various children's struggle, so different from one another, one worries as a parent, well done, blessings Roy
Typo : (D)on didn't listen.

Thank you Roy. I think most people get thier hearts broken. I was lucky that I never did but I found the man for me while I was very young. If he'd his heart broken, he never told me.

In P2 "the any" should be any.
In next to last paragraph "on" should be Don.
In last paragraph "is lagging" should be his lagging.
Sounds like they were sowing their wild oats and trying to find each one's intended direction, like most their age seem to experience.
N.O. one of my favorite cities. Spent a lot of time in Gretna, out on the West Bank.

Thank you Brett. I always appreciate you taking the time to point things I need to fix. I guess all kids have a few wild oats the need to sew. My grandmother used to say if they don't do it while they're they will end up making a fool of themselves later. LOL
