Thank you, Debi, for keeping your promise to your friend in telling of her abusive marriage. How sad that your friend had to live like this and it cost her so dearly.
Best wishes,
Mary

I'll bet you hit a few nerves with this one, Debi. Nicely done in honor of your friend. It really makes me sad to see how many marriages are plagued by abusive behavior.

Paul, yes, the tears still came during edits and every time I read. But I promised her and I will do one every year for her. Thanks for the kind comments, my dear friend.
Comment from Heather Bagley
I am so immensely sorry for your loss. It is very good of you to keep your promise and her legacy in this way. Hearing what her husband made her do makes me unfathomably angry; I can't imagine what it does to you. I liked the rhyme scheme of the poem itself, and the flow was really easy to read. ~Heather

Comment from Debbie D'Arcy
This is such a poignant and emotionally intense verse about enforced abortion in an abusive relationship. This must be one of the hardest experiences to suffer and the darkness of this story is only lightened slightly by her trust in you, Debi, that you would tell her story so that others would understand the longer term consequences of abortion. You do this admirably and memorably in this fine verse and I'm sure she would be proud. Thanks for sharing. Debbie

Good on you Debi, I wrote an anti abortion poem some time ago, whatever the circumstance, we have no right to steal a preconceived plan of God, only He has the right to ordain our life span, so it is so wrong to do this, to abuse the sovereign right of people is wrong, wrong, wrong, beautifully written, so sorry for your friend, beautifully written dear girl, blessings Roy

Oh, Debi. I tried to get a lone for more six-star awards because obviously, I do not budget them well. Alas, to no avail. This is beyond stars though. You are writing out of love to give Jane a voice ~ something her abusive husband never did. How cruel to force her to have an abortion and now two lives lost for which he will answer to a much higher judge! I volunteer at a battered women's shelter and it is heartbreaking to see the broken bodies and spirits of women and their children as they come to us as a last resort, and so often, decide to "go back" and "give him one more chance."
I'm sorry you lost a dear friend. I'm honored to know someone who cares so deeply. Your poem is heart-wrenching. My eyes are brimming.
God Bless those who endure such abuse...and those who remember and honor their lives!

I think many have and I commend you for speaking up to say so. If my friend knew of just a few like you, she would be rejoicing right now. God bless you my sweet friend.

Your poem and author's notes tell a very grim story, written from the fetus's point of view and the mother's point of view. My husband and I lost our baby after my first pregnancy and we were both devastated. I can't imagine aborting a baby, especially against your will. I'm glad you chose to write your girlfriend's story. Your chosen picture, with a baby with prayer hands intensifies your message.

This is a very beautiful but sad piece. A lot of women around the world go through DV every day, my prayers are with you. May she rest peacefully. I look forward to seeing more of your work.
