What an interesting man. His poem is lovely for that infamous day. It's wonderful that you saved all his work. Bless his heart, he had it hard at first, trying to keep a farm going at such a young age.

What an interesting story you shared about your father. I loved reading and learning about him. You did a great job describing the qualities that made him unique. I'm thrilled you saved that file and shared a bit with FS. Your father's poem is awesome. Your father was a brave man with a great work ethic.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Your dad was a good writer and apparently he passed his skill on to his son. Your dad and my dad were pretty close in age, and the followed fairly similar paths. I did not have a conversation with my dad's mother until I reached the age of 28. Apparently she and my mother did not care for each other, so she stayed away from the both of us. When we met, it was discovered that my grandmother had much in common when it came to writing poetry. She asked after a few minutes of talking who my favorite poet was and I answered immediately Pail Laurence Dunbar. She started crying because he was also her favorite poet. I had never told anyone before who my favorite poet was. She gave me a copy of a book she had hand typed and put into a paper cover. It was falling apart and fading. so i transcribed it and put into a book that I later published through Amazon-Kindle Direct publishing. Sadly this took place after she passed away. Happily many of my cousins who never got the chance to read the book now have their own copies to read and share with their children and grand children.

Thank you, my friend, you have a good story there if you have not written it. Terry.

This is a lovely memory of you father, Terry. It sounds like he grew up to be a good and talented man. His poem was a perfect description of what he felt and saw. You've done an excellent job of sharing this story with us.

One little grammar issue: "Everyone, on and off base, were(was) glued to the broadcast." - although the subject of this sentence includes many people, the word is singular, requiring a singular verb. If you try reading it without the part between the commas, you will hear the problem.

This short biography is cruelly conscious of how hard life can be. It celebrates several of the writer's forebears who bravely and stubbornly pursue life, liberty, and happiness, - and survival in the much less comfortable eras that preceded ours.
This commemorative essay is also a tribute to both those who write, and the necessity they feel to write. In any age, it is an important thing to leave our stories to be tendons of human experience that reach into the future.
In "Remembering Pearl Harbor," Terry Broxson writes directly and clearly about an American family during a time that is now disappearing from the horizons of memory. The title is a little misleading in terms of what to expect within the story; the attack on Pearl Harbor is not as important as the family he describes, although his father's poem from 1943 does proceed naturally from Broxson's discussion of his father's writing. (I don't like the word "lass"; it seems to cloak with cuteness any real woman it names.)

Thank you for the great review, wonderfully written. My mother would not have liked the word "lass" either. With some Irish on my father's side, I wanted emphasize her age. When I was 19, and in college, my father brought up the fact that at 19 he was working a farm by self in order to eat. My mother told him, when she was 19, she had been married a year. He never mentioned that again.

I'm glad you kept your father's poems, I have no real physical memory of my father, apparently he'd left his valuable trade tools to me, but his step kids had stolen what they could from the physical things left. Beautifully written mupy friend, they're showing a documentary on TV next week of Pearl Harbour. We visited the site in 2013 in Hawaii on our way to visit my daughter and family in New York. Most impressive museum, beautifully written, blessings Roy

The story is good, but your dad's poem makes this a 6 star for me. It illustrates so completely what he must have felt and the feelings he shared with you. On Pearl Harbor Day, we became 'one' America. Our country is in need of the kind of unity today that Americans felt in 1943.

Thanks, Terry, for a good read. ann

This is a well-written story and quite a tribute to your father. His poem is also very good. It particularly appeals to those with family of your father's age as you have given us a good view of his life story.
