A stirring and powerful poem, thank you for sharing something so deeply personal. It presents a beautiful arc of life and love and loss between mother and daughter. I don't know how old your mother was when she passed but I'm guessing she lived a long, wonderful life. The final line is amazing: "I'm left drowning in deep sorrow, but in a grateful flood." I hope in the wake of such loss, you are able to tread and stay afloat in that grateful flood and not drown. Wonderful write!

Thank you for the elegant review, Chip. It means a lot.
My mother had just turned 80, so she did
have a long life. I lost her a little at a time over about a year, and then
a final stroke took her pretty quickly. A honerable death for a lovely person. I?m treading better than I had feared. Thank you!

Hi There, this is a wonderful tribute to your late mother. From a difficult birth through a long life. A lovely entry for the contest. Good luck.
I'm so sorry you've lost both your parents last year. It must have been a difficult time. Kind regards. Ulla:)))

Thank you, Ulla. It was rough losing them so closely, but kinder for them. They were so in love!

Excellent rhythm to your verses creating a beautiful interpretation of such a sad event. The strength required to survive the outcome of such a challenge is beyond what I'm sure I could endure! And now a motherless child must live life without that special loving bond that is reserved only for mothers. Also sorry for the loss of your parents, I feel you completely :( wonderful job on this piece.

Dianna, how very compassionate of you! They were both in their 80?s, so they lived a good life, but mothers are supposed to live forever...

Thank you for your wonderful review!!

So sorry for the loss of your beloved parents. Caregiving is hard but I'm sure love lightened the load.

This poem conveys the depth of love between a mother and her child in simple, heartfelt words. Excellent structure and flow. I like the direct language used to highlight tender moments.

I may be wrong but it seems to me that the meter falters in a couple of places.

"A childhood full of danger and joy"
Consider, "In days of childhood's pains and joys"

"that is what motherhood is all about"
Consider, "that is what a mother's all about"

A Grateful Flood is an unusual and creative phrase. You found the perfect illustration.

Best of luck in the contest.

Blessings, Julia

My mom admitted, when she saw me hanging there blue and dead and the old doc backhanding me, she thought, "Lord, how ugly." She got over it. Terrific mom. Excellent poem and tribute to yours.

A loving tribute. Good for you to nurse your parents, be at their side when they crossed over. They gave all their lives for you - mothers do that - reckon it's born in most of us.
Wonderful poem.

Thank you for your lovely review, Gail. I was able to be with both of them when they passed. I'll write one for my dad, who passed away 9 month before my mother, but mother's are especially special!

What a beautiful tribute to your mom! With great strength on her part you entered this world and with equal strength she exited leaving behind a legacy of love. Treasure your memories.

I'm a mother, and I love this, so I can't help but imagine whom you wrote it for is absolutely delighted. I love that you chose to make this piece your first foray back into writing. Lovely beyond words. I wish you all the luck with this in the contest. xo

Very true, and I've been in it for 37. However, I'm about to retire...if one really can.
