My goodness but it is ages since I have seen the night through, and watched the dawn come up in strange bedsits in West London. Shades of all night parties, and listening to vinyls of Elvis Presley, and making love on the carpet. Was I really once not even nineteen years of age? How this poem made the years slip away to those heady, courting days long gone, except I wasn't a poet then. That came later.

I've only stayed up all night a few times - other than when I worked night shifts, which I hated. Oh, and trying to get to the UK on a recent trip :))

Oh, Carol, such a deep, soulful write about a true love (romantic? cherished friend? both?) that once found the power in each other's company in any time of day or night ... a 'love' shared through sight and through experiences and, most of all, through poetic meanderings and recitations and creations ... a 'love' that ended in a brilliant and glorious event but that lingers as each goes their own way - into lifting night and dawning day: beautiful, independent persons beginning as silhouettes until each can find their own new definition in poems of their own!
Aaaaaand I hope I did not just ruin your vision, but that's what I saw -- it is beautiful! :) Thank you for sharing! :) Yvette

I love that you saw what you did in my poem, and of course it's right - because I feel that each person's interpretation is right. I hope that my poems can somehow relate to individuals in different ways. To be honest, this was based on a dream...and then the birds sort of appeared :))

Thank you for reading and thinking about it!!

A poem full of imagery and your descriptions are chilling, stark and profound, then the rays of sun lifted the mood at the end, I loved the reference to eagles to give your poem great resonance, love Dolly x

Very colorful memory of a love, well described. Like so many, it ended. Favorite lines:

The eagles roared out from their nests
and then I knew where You had gone,
all those years ago.
Our words found all the living
as old night lifted,

This is beautifully composed, Carol. Hopefully our words live on in some fashion as we're obsessed with them. The first stanza is especially meaningful. Excellent. Marilyn

I'll never know how you poets do it. The styles of poetry change daily as a new one is introduced all the time. That's one of the reasons I write prose.

Lol, I like to write prose too but it's so hard to get a lot of reviews! Well, for me it is anyway.

Oh thank you for mentioning that line about the silhouettes, I really liked that but nobody else said anything about it, lol. I really appreciate your read and review, and for pointing out other lines I liked too :))

Hi, Carol This is a brilliant poem. I liked it from stat to finish
Especially this stanza:

"We chanted scriptures of old fire
and never-forgotten longing;
of deep history; centuries-old blood,
and desires borne on wind.
We let our words go free,
like cliff sparrows' swoop
and vertiginous fall;"

Suggestion: "We recited our poems
as today's sky became purple
and crows flew home to roost."

Bless you, Carol. Great job. Bob
