This is a very sad but realistic poem about the end of a life that will bring an end to a 50 year relationship. The speaker is ready to give up this life with its pain and suffering and ironically the patient is the one offering comfort.

Well said. I have seen this many times as a pastor. I once had a Moslem psychiatrist say to me that devoted Christians die differently than others. Looking forward I hope I die well, whether I am in pain or not. I am determined to experience my dying fully, as I have sought to live my life fully.

It does sound like you had an interesting discussion with your friends. Your poem captures a peaceful feeling of the person near death. That would be a good way to go. This is a thought-provoking poem, Marijke

Lovely representation of love and life. It is still so to say goodbye to those we love even when they are ready. Sometimes we think we are ready but when it happens we miss them so much. Beautifully written.
