Wow, this is very inspiring and motivating just when I need it. I had the urge to write and publish a story so when I am long gone I will somehow still be here but have really been procrastinating and sad to say I always have time for TV. I love the paragraph that begins with "Difficult to pin down..." it is really rhythmic (hope that is a word!). I wonder if you are concerned, like me, with the availability of so many books on-line now, my local librarian even told me that kindle books are now available! I thought I would never get a kindle, I love books, especially used books. It is such a thrill when I see the previous owners comments on the worn pages. But alas I was given a kindle for Christmas, I have made use of the on-line books at the library but if I myself wanting a classic novel you can bet I'll purchase a used book.

You are a true lover of books, Kareau. It's heartening to see that. I'm glad my story played some small role in getting you started on your book. You know, not trying to get you to read something else of mine, but the chapter just before this was designed to help the writer get off his/her duff and write that novel. It's the "Part II" Springtime one that ends with "Buh Bye". Again, thanks, and most especially for the six.

Hi Ray, too bad that your son was cheated but not your fault nor his. It is easy to be clever in hindsight, haven't we all been there. God forbid that books will die out, what's the point then of writing anything? I feel strongly about that. Enjoyed your writing as always. All the best, Ulla

The library was such a treat when I was a kid. The local library was small so my mom would take me to the library a few towns over that was huge (to a kid) , and I would happily leave with a giant stack. Libraries are different now. Books on CD and graphic novels expand, electronic books, Amazon...but you still do run across kindred spirits. Love your burst in the last paragraph, your faith in the church of the Word.

This post seems to tap into a lot of readers' memories. That makes me happy. Thanks for adding yours, Ed. "Church of the Word". I love it. I don't even want to go through foster parentage with it. I want to adopt it outright.

This is a wonderful essay on the important part we writers play in this world. While some books impart knowledge, others teach us how we should treat people no matter their race, religion, or sexual orientation. Romances give us faith in falling in love and having a happy ever after. Adventure books and thrillers take us to places around the world we are not likely to ever visit. Mysteries challenge us to find the villain before the hero/heroine does. Science fiction shows us how life might be 'out there, and in fantasies, we visit places that have never been and will never be.
I know I left out many other types of books. However, they all teach us and/or give us a chance to escape the real world, our mundane existence, for a short time.

Your description of the excitement of those going to the library brought back such good memories, Jay. I loved the library and still remember those feelings of the marvelous promise of all those shelves of books. I fear children don't get that chance much these days.
As always, a delightful read.

G'day Jay. Beautiful work mate. Libraries are great places, I belong to them in each stae in Australia. I think books will always be there a bit like how old furniture comes back into vogue, I forget the name they use for it. Great job Sir. Cheers Fez

THank you, Fez. So happy you enjoyed this. Everyone seems to have his or her memory of libraries and youth.

This is very good, and I suppose all us writers would love to high five you. Books are important, books make us see life from different perspectives, and the writing of books is such a 'delicious' challenge. Oh the joy of plucking out the exact right word that conveys the precise shade of meaning we desire.
But surely, surely that 'mistake' could be corrected, the money refunded??

Ah, thank you, Serendipity! So glad this resonated with you. The money could have been refunded if I had kept the original receipt and it showed we paid $50 for it. But I didn't keep it. What could go wrong?

This so reminds me of something Ray Bradbury might comment on. He was always expounding on the influence of visual media on reading. This piece instills some hope that reading still has the power to inform and enthrall one mind at a time. Good stuff.

Bill, thank you four your always astute slant on my posts. And of course for the six this one yielded. How you keep them so late in the week I don't know. But proud to be the recipient.

Hi Jay, what a fascinating blog! A truly wonderful story on how our society is going forward in this day and age, I personally think we need to slow down and take a long hard look at ourselves.
Your story as always is very inspiring, very informative and wonderful reading, it's nice to get an inkling of how a brilliant writer ticks, thank you my friend.

I coulda sworn you were talking to me, but I had to look over my shoulder to see if there was a brilliant writer standing behind me. Thanks, Eric, for being here and finding something of value in most my posts.

I always find enjoyment in your words Jay, no matter what you write about.

A pity your son didn't tell you about being ripped off earlier. You could have gone back and sorted them out.
It is good to see people still going to the library to read the written word, enabling them to use their imagination, instead of sitting like zombies in front of a television set.
